Without a doubt, Chainsaw Man chapter 177’s official release earlier this week was likely one of the most highly anticipated in series history, certainly so when looking at the Academy Saga only. While the issue didn’t quite go in the way fans were expecting it to, it was nonetheless an enthralling entry into the series, setting up major developments for chapter 178.

Specifically, Chainsaw Man chapter 177’s final pages set up major moves from War Devil Yoru, which seemingly involve collecting on a contract she now has the authority to collect on. This obviously brings to mind the Gun Devil, whom fans have previously seen make contracts with the president of the United States. Coincidentally, Yoru’s current actions are affecting American citizens and seem to be stirring something awake within the Statue of Liberty.

It seems likely that both events seen in Chainsaw Man chapter 177’s final pages are related, with Yoru using this contract to fuel whatever lurks within Lady Liberty’s copper shell. In fact, the very nature of the Statue of Liberty’s construction supports this, in turn all but confirming that a new, powerful entity will soon be introduced to the series.

Chainsaw Man chapter 177 could be setting up the introduction of a Devil based on America and its exploits

Firstly, it’s worth establishing how Chainsaw Man chapter 177’s National Pistol Association of America members may have been somehow contracted to War Devil Yoru. More specifically, it’s likely that they were contracted to the Gun Devil without their knowledge, will, or consent. This has already been shown as possible via the American president sacrificing one year of the lifespans of the entire population of America to the Gun Devil in chapter 75.

In turn, it’s likely that the heads of the National Pistol Association of America made a similar contract with the Gun Devil, offering up their members as the price to be paid. This would also make sense given its likely role in the Association’s existence; gun control is said to be heavily regulated by virtually every nation in-series, so for America to have such a group in the first place is confusing to the point of necessitating explanation.

This would also explain why those roughly 400,000 association members who were affected lost their index fingers, or in other words, their trigger fingers, specifically. Assuming this is the case, Yoru is likely using the price of that contract, those trigger fingers, to fuel whatever war-themed Devil is hiding within the Statue of Liberty.

This is further supported by the fact that the Statue of Liberty cracks at Chainsaw Man chapter 177’s end, teasing it to be housing something inside that has now been awoken. Many have already recognized this, questioning if series creator, author, and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto is making a reference to The Monument Mythos web series.

In one of the episodes, the concept of the “LIBERTYLURKER” is addressed. Essentially, it’s a horrifying entity living within the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal that is either fed Ellis Island immigrants or given sacrifices of immigrants in its name. However, the island’s closure led to the beast emerging from the pedestal in 1985 within the web series canon. Thus, fans are now wondering whether or not Fujimoto is pulling from similar concepts for his next reveal.

It would certainly make sense given the sacrifice of the index/trigger fingers of 400,000 National Pistol Association members. By feeding this sacrifice to whatever is lurking within the Statue of Liberty, Yoru may be able to call upon it, or even strengthen it before weaponizing it as she did the Tank and Gun Devils. However, this is all speculative as of this article’s writing. Thankfully, fans can expect an answer in chapter 178’s release on Tuesday, September 24.
