Chainsaw Man chapter 178 was expected to fully and finally reveal what Yoru was up to with the Statue of Liberty and sacrificing the index fingers of 400,000 Americans. Officially released on Tuesday, September 24, chapter 178 did excitingly reveal what lurked beneath Lady Liberty, dubbing it the Gun Goddess.
Chainsaw Man chapter 178 also seemingly confirms that the Aging Devil’s deal with Public Safety has been solidified, with children already gathered. Likewise, the Aging Devil makes an offer to Pochita that the Chainsaw Devil is unlikely to refuse in the wake of Yoru’s devastating attack with the Gun Goddess.

Chainsaw Man chapter 178: A Devil to the core
Chainsaw Man chapter 178 began with a focus on some American citizens who were pointing at something in the sky as rubble came crashing down. This was revealed to be the framework of the Statue of Liberty, with several people pointing up at whatever the facade’s destruction revealed. This showed what, given the issue’s title of “Gun Goddess,” was presumably the Gun Goddess herself.
Her body was largely skeletal, seemingly possessing organs but lacking the skin to keep them encased within her skeletal structure. It had two muscled arms, which combined into a massive rifle-like weapon, as well as a feminine face with long hair. The lower half of its jaw and bottom row of teeth were missing, while it had what appeared to be a visor-like protrusion from its forehead made out of gun-shaped growths.
Chainsaw Man chapter 178 then showed Yoru’s finger pointing at something as she uttered the word “bang,” prompting the Gun Goddess to fire its weapon. The bullet was a giant index finger, shown racing across the ocean until hitting its target of Chainsaw Devil Pochita in Japan. The impact causes massive levels of destruction, completely leveling the area surrounding where it hit Denji.
Yoru was shocked in the aftermath, as was Asa Mitaka, to the point where she regained control of her body with a horrified expression on her face. The next panel then showed an adjusted perspective of her, showing the massive hole she blew through a wall of skyscrapers and the smoke and fire rising up around this destruction.
Chainsaw Man chapter 178 saw Asa ask how she could forget that, at the end of the day, War Devil Yoru was truly a Devil. This transitioned into a panel showing Asa still horrified at the destruction, while Yoru almost belly-laughed at the carnage before her with a smile on her face and rosy cheeks.
The focus then shifted to the destroyed area where Pochita was, showing buildings completely leveled and broken in half from the impact. Amid this destruction was the smoking, charred corpse of Pochita. All that was left was his central torso and head, all of his remaining limbs gone and cracks appearing all over his body.
Chainsaw Man chapter 178: One deal accepted as another is offered
However, Chainsaw Man chapter 178 did see help come for Denji in the form of the Aging Devil, who said it’d save Pochita as its blood poured into the unconscious Pochita’s mouth. The Aging Devil then told Pochita to eat its legs, then its arms, lower half, upper half, and organs, before eating the head very last. Likewise, this seemingly confirmed that the head is what’s significant for a Devil’s erasure via Pochita’s powers given this condition of saving it for last.
The Aging Devil then revealed that its contract with Public Safety dictates that children will die with each bite Pochita takes of the Aging Devil. The Aging Devil added that this was romantic before asking Chainsaw Man if it understood, as Denji seemingly showed signs of life while drinking the Aging Devil’s blood. The issue ended with the Aging Devil telling Pochita to eat up, as it looked in a nearby mirror, which showed several children being escorted by military forces.
Chainsaw Man chapter 178: In summation
Chainsaw Man chapter 178 is an incredibly exciting issue that pushes the manga’s plot forward to a significant degree. There’s also a large amount of implicit worldbuilding, as well as a setup for what seems to be an ulterior motive by the Aging Devil in assisting Pochita. Thankfully, with no break week following this issue, fans can expect to get some clarity on this next week with chapter 179’s release.
