Chainsaw Man chapter 180 was expected to focus on the Aging Devil as it began a fight with War Devil Yoru/Asa Mitaka and Pochita, still in his Hero of Hell form. Officially released on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, the manga instead went in a very unique and unexpected direction relative to what fans were expecting.

Rather than fight Yoru and Pochita, the Aging Devil instead sent them to an unknown world, marked by a wide forest, which is seemingly untouched by any sort of development. It also seems like the pair will be stuck there for quite some time thanks to some key information they get shortly after their arrival.

Chainsaw Man chapter 180 begins Asa and Denji’s struggles to escape from a new world

Chainsaw Man chapter 180: A dream?

Chainsaw Man chapter 180 begins with Yoru attempting to attack the Aging Devil once more. However, the Aging Devil instead points its own finger at Yoru, also saying the word “bang” to attack her as it does so. Rather than physically destroy her, the Aging Devil’s attack seemingly affects her state of mind as Yoru begins falling into a black void.

This transitions into shots of Asa’s recurring dream of running in an alley, but as she realizes this she questions whether or not it’s a dream and when she even went to sleep. Asa is then seen standing in a daze before snapping back to life, finding herself in a massive, seemingly untouched forest with what seems to be a lake at its center.

Chainsaw Man chapter 180 sees Asa question where she is before seeing Denji fast asleep on the ground next her. As she says his name, War Devil Yoru takes over their shared body and tries to attack Denji. However, nothing happens no matter how many times she tries to do so, visibly upsetting her.

That prompts Asa to take back over, seemingly horrified by Yoru’s actions. As she bends down to Denji, a man approaches and welcomes her to “a world the Aging Devil created.” The man explains that he was once a Devil Hunter, and good at it too, with friends who respected him for his work. He added that he had no complaints until passing by a mirror one day.

Chainsaw Man chapter 180 sees the man comment on how his laugh lines have deepened, and that he doesn’t want to age. He adds that if there were such a thing as the Aging Devil, he’d make a contract with it. In the present, the man explains that once these words left his mouth, he suddenly found himself here in this world.

Asa asks the man where the exit is, but he says he hasn’t found it yet despite being here for 82 years. He adds that he’s the youngest one here, and that he doesn’t get hungry or even thirsty. He also explains that he’s attempted suicide several times, but seemingly can’t die in this world. The man adds that while there are other humans deeper in the world, they’ve lost their minds and it’s better to keep away from them.

Chainsaw Man chapter 180: No way out

Chainsaw Man chapter 180 sees Asa, clearly freaking out over the situation, ask if there is any way out at all. The man adds that one human supposedly escaped the world a long time ago, prompting Asa to ask how. However, the man ignores that, instead saying it’s “almost that time” and that he’s “gonna lose it,” so Asa can disappear now.

Asa is clearly confused by that as the man starts hugging a tree, almost as if he intends to climb it. It’s revealed that he views Asa as a hallucination he’s dreamt up, calling her Ritsuko as he asks Asa for confirmation of this. Asa questions what he means, but the man instead squishes his face to the tree while wrapping his body around it. The issue ends with the man chanting “mreee” as Asa looks on horrified and confused.

While certainly not what fans were expecting, Chainsaw Man chapter 180 is nevertheless an exciting issue which sets up an intriguing path forward. Chapter 180 is also celebratory for the fact that Denji seems to have returned to his normal state following his transformation into the Hero of Hell. While fans may not know where Fujimoto is going currently, it’s clear there’s plenty to be excited about for the series’ near future.
