Heading into Chainsaw Man chapter 180, fans were expecting a fight to break out between the Aging Devil, War Devil Yoru, and Pochita given the formermost’s previous threats. However, what fans instead got was the apparent setup for a new, character-focused arc, or at least a character-focused section of the ongoing arc.
Chainsaw Man chapter 180 accomplished this by separating Asa Mitaka and Denji into a new, apparently Garden of Eden-esque world based on what fans know so far. The opening scenes of this new world not only heavily suggest a character-focused section of the story, but also serve to highlight just how obsessed and irredeemable Yoru has become.
Chainsaw Man chapter 180 cements Yoru as a despicable villain in Tatsuki Fujimoto’s story
Upon discovering that she’s in a new world in Chainsaw Man chapter 180, Asa naturally looks around and finds a sleeping Denji on the ground nearby. She’s clearly relieved at this, but her moment of relaxation allows Yoru to reclaim control over their shared body. She then attempts to attack and kill Denji despite him not being transformed.
While she’s thankfully unsuccessful, it goes to show how relentless Yoru is in her pursuit of superiority over Pochita. Firstly, it’s no longer about the sport of and pride that comes with defeating Pochita in battle. If Yoru still valued proving herself the stronger Devil rather than just killing Pochita, she’d have never attempted to attain victory by killing Denji, let alone while he was unconscious.
Yoru’s actions in Chainsaw Man chapter 180 also show that she’s even willing to sacrifice Asa’s own goals and dreams despite needing her body to achieve her own. As far as the pair have been made aware by Famine Devil Fami, defeating the “black Chainsaw Man,” or in other words, Pochita himself, is the key to each getting what they want. Likewise, Yoru’s attempt at killing Denji is her trampling on Asa’s dreams and wishes as well.
This act also once again highlights the previously established notion that Yoru will sacrifice anyone or anything to achieve her goals. It also further establishes that Yoru doesn’t view Asa as an equal in their relationship via what Denji represents for Asa’s character. While this has been previously established in the past, chapter 180’s events serve to drive them home even further.
All of these implications are likely to be explored in the manga’s upcoming weeks and months, especially given that Yoru was unable to utilize her powers on Denji. This suggests that the use of Devil powers, at least in a way that would harm others, isn’t allowed in this world. Likewise, with no fighting able to take place, a focus on Denji, Asa, Yoru, and possibly even Pochita as characters is likely to come.
This would also make sense given how action-packed the manga has been recently. While Yoru and Pochita’s fight likely will be picked back up at a later point, it’s unlikely to occur anytime soon based on the current information fans have. However, this upcoming focus on the series’ cast as characters rather than fighters will likely prove fruitful in multiple ways.
In summation
It should come as no surprise that Yoru is a true villain. What’s special about Chainsaw Man chapter 180’s events is that the series goes out of its way to highlight how detestably irredeemable Yoru is. This is done via her attempt to kill Denji, which is akin to trampling over Asa’s own wants, and their status as equals in the current context of their relationship.
