Heading into the official release of Chainsaw Man chapter 183, fans were confident that the issue’s main focus would be on Denji’s flashback of Aki Hayakawa and Power. Officially released on Tuesday, November 11, 2024, mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto instead included the brief focus on Aki and Power as one of many brief flashback panels in the issue.

However, Chainsaw Man chapter 183 made up for this by revealing some significant information about the physical relationship Denji has with Pochita in terms of his body. Likewise, this is significant as it reveals the rules of Denji’s Hybrid status to readers, and offers a contrast to the fate which Asa Mitaka and War Devil Yoru are seemingly headed for.

Chainsaw Man chapter 183 slowly but surely expands on the rules of Hybrids and how Asa/Yoru are different

Chainsaw Man chapter 183 first begins differentiating between Denji’s physical body and Pochita’s physical body via Denji throwing up the Bitterness Devil’s head. Whereas the Snow Devil’s head was small enough to relatively reasonably be able to fit inside Denji’s human stomach, the Bitterness Devil’s head is not. Upon being fully vomited by Denji, its size is shown to be comparable to that of a human’s upper body.

Denji accurately states that there’s no way such a massive head could fit inside his human stomach, which is true. While external factors can influence it, the capacity of an average adult human stomach is roughly 1.5 liters of food and drink. The Bitterness Devil’s head would most definitely exceed this capacity, meaning Denji’s stomach would’ve burst instantly if the Devils Pochita ate were stored there.

Instead, Chainsaw Man chapter 183 suggests that Denji’s stomach and Pochita’s are two separate entities, as are their bodies. Denji himself confirms this when he says that “Chainsaw Man’s stomach” is “still in the real world.” The manga further confirms this by showing a panel of Pochita’s battered corpse lying motionlessly on the ground. In other words, this seems to be confirmation that Denji’s body and Pochita’s are still two separate beings, rather than one.

This is obviously very significant for its implications on Denji’s existence and Pochita’s abilities, but also as a contrast to Asa Mitaka and War Devil Yoru’s current status. Whereas the manga is clearly saying that Denji and Pochita are still two separate entities, Yoru and Asa seem to be merging into one singular being. The fact of Yoru seemingly having feelings of her own for Denji despite previously claiming them to be Asa’s further supports this.

There are also signs that this is the fate Asa and Yoru were headed to all along, such as their constant existence in one body which doesn’t undergo a major transformation as they switch. This is distinct from other Hybrids, whose bodies change completely as they transform and take advantage of their respective Devil powers. Given the emphasis Chainsaw Man chapter 183 puts on Hybrids being separate beings, it seems Asa and Yoru’s presumed fate is inevitable.

While Asa and Yoru’s ultimate fate is still speculative, Fujimoto is clearly using chapter 183 as a means of differentiating their situation from Yoru and Pochita’s. At a minimum, fans can at least confirm that Denji and Pochita are still yet to become one singular being in a body. While this opens up plenty of negative doors for the future, it also stands as a beacon of hope that Denji will never be anyone but himself.
