Chainsaw Man chapter 183 was a momentous release from mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto for many reasons, but one of the biggest is Reze’s reappearance in the series. While this only came in the form of a flashback, it nevertheless marks the first appearance of Reze since the final arcs of Part 1, the Public Safety Saga.
Reze’s return immediately became one of Chainsaw Man chapter 183’s most significant developments for the sheer fact of her return, in and of itself. However, chapter 183’s return of Reze is also momentous for what Denji says about her, and everyone else he thinks of during the issue.
Chainsaw Man chapter 183 sees Denji officially confirm that he truly does love Reze
By nature of Denji’s dialogue in Chainsaw Man chapter 183, he proves that he did truly love Reze. While thinking of her along with the likes of Aki Hayakawa, Power, and Control Devil Nayuta, he explicitly says that “all the people [he] love[s] disappear from [his] life in the end.” He adds that this is true for “every single one” of them, further driving home that he does truly love Reze.
This is particularly significant as the implications behind Denji’s feelings weren’t necessarily as clear and affirmative as those behind Reze’s were. While fans knew Denji was romantically interested in Reze, it was never clear if he truly loved her.
Contrarily, many fans accepted Reze’s final act of independence as a confession of love— she abandoned her plan to run away on her own and instead tried to meet Denji and take him up on running away together.
Likewise, Denji offering this to her was the strongest indication we had of his true feelings prior to Chainsaw Man chapter 183. However, Denji was much more immature at the time, still learning about personal relationships in general, let alone love.
It was, therefore, difficult to decipher whether this offer from Denji was a true step in his character development, or him giving into his carnal desires yet again.
The former is proven true with his confession of love in chapter 183. It’s also worth emphasizing that, while she is mentioned among who Denji would consider his “family,” it’s clear he loved Reze romantically.
This is supported by both their prior relationship, and the uniqueness in Reze’s reappearance relative to the others. Fujimoto seemingly suggests that Denji is symbolically associating his love for Reze with something, a truly human and romantic act of love.
The fact that neither Aki and Power, nor Nayuta’s panels, see them associated with any type of object or symbol further distinguishes his love for them from Reze’s.
While families certainly have traditions or symbols significant enough to symbolize their bonds, the fact that Reze is the only one who gets one here further marks his love for her. It confirms that his love for her is indeed romantic, and suggests it to be deeper than fans once thought.
In summation
Through the use of symbols, text, and a clever flashback, Fujimoto confirms Denji’s feelings for Reze in Chainsaw Man chapter 183.
His love for her is further differentiated by the use of symbols, which is unique among those other characters he once loved who were mentioned in the issue.
