Chainsaw Man chapter 185 resolves a previous conversation between Barem and Denji, shedding light on Pochita's Devil Erasure ability. This interaction was key, given the information revealed in the latest chapter. In brief, Barem wanted to exploit Pochita's ability and continue Makima's legacy by ruining Denji's life while working to prevent the Death Devil's arrival. However, Denji was oblivious to Pochita possessing such an ability.

In Chainsaw Man chapter 185, a significant revelation hints at how Pochita might have come to possess such an ability. It relates to humans turning into trees and, most recently, Denji cutting down one of those trees to revive Pochita in the real world. A connection like this would redefine Pochita’s role and the broader implications of Devil Erasure.

Moreover, it would establish a deeper connection between humanity, the Devils, and Pochita’s true purpose. As such, a theory revolving around this concept has surfaced and is making its rounds in the fandom.

Disclaimer: This article is speculative in nature.

Chainsaw Man chapter 185 irons out vital Barem-Denji conversation

To add a little context, a reference must be made to Chainsaw Man chapter 170. The chapter features Barem revealing that he (i.e., the Chainsaw Man church) and Public Safety were after Chainsaw Man/Pochita's Devil Erasure ability. Denji was oblivious to this since "chainsaws didn't have that power," to which Barem simply agreed. Even viewers began to wonder about the origins of such power.

Now, delving into the theory, Chainsaw Man chapter 185 saw the Aging Devil reveal that the humans trapped in its world became trees. This occurred when they contemplated escape and turned into trees upon the "culmination of thought." Considering that they spent about 2,000 years doing this, they were also aging, i.e., growing old.

Putting two and two together, the theory speculates that humans becoming trees is linked to Pochita's Devil Erasure. In essence, humans turn into trees at some point, and tools for cutting trees, like chainsaws, become symbols of the end of existence. Thus, the Chainsaw Man acquires the ability to erase Devils. However, when Aging comes to exist, the tree-fication is forgotten, but Pochita retains his ability.

Further, it is theorized that there could be something that is able to create new concepts—a sort of anti-Pochita. Common knowledge might suggest that humanity invents new ideas, but it would not explain how Aging came to exist.

Chainsaw Man chapter 185's revelation could be game-changing

The theory mentioned above is quite solid, considering everything we have learned up to this point. Needless to say, creator Tatsuki Fujimoto is unbelievable at foreshadowing and referencing, and this could be another great example of that. If a theory like this turns out to be true, then the revelations of Chainsaw Man chapter 185 will be game-changing.

It does make sense, though, given that in Part I, Makima spoke of four possible outcomes for humans alongside death. Turning into a tree and living on is very likely one of them, as the trees in Aging's world were alive, screamed, and bled when Denji hacked at them. Pochita might have erased the other three possibilities, leaving only death as the ultimate outcome.

But there does seem to be a missing piece here - Did aging already exist, or was it created? If humans reached the "culmination of thought" and became trees, then it isn't likely they aged into trees. There is ambiguity about that. Or maybe humans did age, and those who didn't reach this outcome would have one of the other three, which could explain aging being a concept and its associated fear.

Final thoughts

Chainsaw Man chapter 185 brings some interesting points to light and finally kicks Denji's brilliant plan into action. With Pochita revitalized, it is only a matter of time till fans get another bout between him and the Aging Devil. This time, the odds will be more even since the last time the Aging Devil was fully formed, Pochita only had his torso.

But returning to the crux of this feature, Aging's words in this chapter definitely resonate with Barem's. However, the linkage between them is debatable. Humans turning into trees is definitely intriguing, and the process of how is even more so. Therefore, for the time being, this might be relegated to the background since Pochita is on his way to Public Safety, which promises to be gruesome and chaotic, in true Chainsaw Man fashion.
