With Hirofumi Yoshida’s return and apparent thinking up a plan in the previous issue, Chainsaw Man Chapter 189 was expected to see Denji, Asa Mitaka, and Yoshida launch a counterattack. Officially released on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, the installment did indeed see the trio try to attack the Aging Devil through Pochita’s mouth in various ways.

However, Chainsaw Man Chapter 189 saw them largely unsuccessful in their initial endeavors, but eventually finding a means of successfully attacking the Aging Devil. Unfortunately, this success relies on Fumiko Mifune’s assistance, with the exact nature of her assistance all but confirming her to not be fully human.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 189 began with the Aging Devil in shock as Hirofumi Yoshida’s hand suddenly protruded from Pochita’s mouth. Yoshida uses the Octopus Devil to grab onto a nearby pillar, but it’s chopped off, leading him to say they’ll be killed even if they return to reality. Aging Devil, meanwhile, realizes their plan and calls it interesting, when suddenly Asa Mitaka’s hand sticks out of Pochita’s mouth.

As it’s revealed to be War Devil Yoru in control, she fires a Bang at the Aging Devil, but misses it. Yoru curses her inability to see what she’s targeting, before seemingly getting an idea while looking at Denji. Suddenly, Yoru’s body is halfway into Denji’s mouth, with the other half sticking out of Pochita’s mouth. However, when Yoru opens her eyes in reality, she sees the Aging Devil’s finger in front of her as it attacks her with a Bang.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 189 sees Yoru/Asa’s skin begin to sag and grow old, with her groaning as this happens. She then jumps out of Denji’s mouth while screaming, turning to ask Denji and Yoshida if she’s beautiful. Her face back to normal, Denji and Yoshida each confirm this, while Yoru curses Aging for marring her beauty for even an instant. Yoshida is then seen lamenting that Devil powers don’t work in this world, while Pochita continues to hack away at Aging.

However, Aging uses Fumiko Mifune’s large intestine to regenerate itself, agreeing with seemingly Hirofumi Yoshdia that hostility is only adding to the body count. Aging then tells Pochita that he must be getting sick of human flesh by now, adding that its own tastes like lotus root. As it says this, someone appears next to Fumiko Mifune, which Aging immediately notices as it’s revealed to be another Fumiko Mifune.

The second, seemingly uninjured Fumiko comments on how hardy she is for still being alive, the Aging Devil clearly confused at what’s happening. As this second Fumiko stares down at the other, she adds that she promised herself she’d side with the likelier winner in her dying moment. The second Fumiko says she’ll leave it to the first, who agrees and tells Yoshida that she’s giving him her heart as Chainsaw Man Chapter 189 shifts focus to Yoshida.

He thanks her for doing so before telling the Octopus Devil that he’ll let it have Fumiko’s heart, telling it to swallow as he sticks his hand through Denji’s mouth and out of Pochita’s. A shot of the building where Pochita and Aging are fighting appear, followed by the issue’s final panel which sees a humanoid, octopus-like creature burst through the building. While unclear what it is currently, it seems likely that this is an “Octopus Goddess” akin to Yoru’s Gun Goddess.

Without a doubt, Chainsaw Man Chapter 189 is much more shocking and exciting than fans expected it to be. Although Denji and co’s offensive wasn’t as effective as they hoped initially, the issue’s final moments suggest that Yoshida has summoned something comparable to the Gun Goddess. Likewise, the fight against the Aging Devil may truly begin for Denji and co in the next installment.

Also of note from Chapter 189 is the apparent reveal that there are two Fumiko Mifune’s, which likely has an explanation outside of it being her twin or something similar. Instead, this detail is likely meant to tease Fumiko’s true nature, potentially revealing her as the Death Devil as fans have thought for quite some time.
