Chainsaw Man may have just erased the primary way of communication in the world, and it can get worse

Chainsaw Man chapter 172 was released on July 23, 2024, and was titled "Bzzz! Boom! Chomp!" The chapter focused entirely on the recently unleashed Hero of Hell and his fights against the Public Safety Department. Although fans expected the new Special Division to put up a subpar fight against the enraged Hero of Hell, they were instantly wiped out by him.

The entire chapter boiled down to the Hero of Hell targeting the Ear Devil to wipe out the existence of ears, leading many fans to wonder why the Public Safety Department would even send such an important devil to someone who can erase devils and their concepts.

While not having ears will truly have catastrophic effects in the manga, it can become way worse if the Hero of Hell continues his rather strategic targeting of devils.

Chapter 172 saw the Hero of Hell eating the Ear Devil and erasing the existence of ears from this manga's universe. This erasure removed one of the most important means of communication in the story.

Devils in this series are tied to their names and the concepts they embody. While devils that die in the human world appear in Hell, when they die in Hell, they appear in the human world.

Chainsaw Man eating a devil essentially erases the devil from all of existence while stopping the devil’s reincarnation cycle entirely. The concept that the devil used to embody is also completely erased from existence, along with any memories related to this concept.

Nuclear weapons, along with numerous other things like AIDS, do not simply exist in the story since the devils associated with these concepts were eaten by the Hero of Hell and thus were wiped from existence.

It is entirely possible that the Public Safety Department keeps sending more devil hunter squads, which might contain devils like the Eye Devil or the Tongue Devil. If this continues, the entire universe of this story might lose every single means of communication.

The Ear Devil has already been consumed, and ears were wiped out of existence. Previous mentions of this phenomenon suggest that any and all memories of ears, and thus hearing or listening to music or the entire concept of conversation via speaking, might be erased in a few more chapters.

The War Devil previously stated that the Hero of Hell could actually throw up the concepts that it has devoured, and thus those concepts would return to existence. It is possible that the current plot ends up with the Hero of Hell devouring multiple essential devils, and Fami along with Yoru might make the Hero of Hell throw up all of the concepts to return the world to normal.

While the erasure of ears will certainly have grave consequences in the setting of the manga, it could get even worse if devils like the Finger Devil or the Fire Devil end up being the next victims of the Hero of Hell.

While it is clear that the Public Safety Department was at its peak when Makima was in control, it is still possible that sending such important devils as the Ear Devil directly to the Hero of Hell might be part of an elaborate plan by the Public Safety Department.

Chainsaw Man manga has entered a break following the release of chapter 172, and chapter 173 will be released on August 6, 2024.
