Recent weeks of author and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga series have been some of the most chaotic and unpredictable in its entire serialization history. The latest issues have been so hectic, in fact, that fans seem to have already forgotten about the Aging Devil’s pending deal with Public Safety and the Japanese government.
More specifically, the Aging Devil is offering itself to be eaten by Chainsaw Man, or Pochita, in exchange for the murder of 10,000 children with Japanese citizenship. The Japanese government approved of this deal due to the benefits it may afford humanity, but Pochita erased the Mouth Devil and prevented it from fully going through as a result.
While it’s likely that the Mouth Devil’s return will lead to the deal going through, Chainsaw Man readers are more concerned with why the Aging Devil is interested in this offer. Standing nothing to gain by nature of their demise inherently being involved in the deal, fans have concluded that the only explanation is the Aging Devil’s allegiance to the Death Devil.
Chainsaw Man’s Death Devil may already be plotting its return, and the Aging Devil’s contract is the key
The aforementioned offer that the Aging Devil made came in Chainsaw Man chapter 174, with the newest Primal Fear Devil not specifying any other terms or intents as far as fans know. However, the issue is that the Aging Devil stands nothing to gain in this contract. Any increase in its power that the sacrifice of the children would result in would immediately be invalidated by it being consumed by Pochita.
Fujimoto has also heavily emphasized throughout the series that Devils must honor the contracts they make or suffer grave consequences. Likewise, it’s a foregone conclusion that the Aging Devil is not simply trying to trick Public Safety into strengthening its own powers. That being said, the answer may lie in something else that the manga has demonstrated in Part 2: a Devil’s summoning process.
Generally speaking, Devils in Chainsaw Man cannot travel between Hell and Earth without dying. Two known exceptions are the Hell Devil, who is specifically unique in that regard and can do so as a part of its abilities, and Pochita, who is generally unbound by most rules on Devils. Yet, in the Falling Devil arc, the titular Devil was able to appear on Earth by causing a mass sacrifice of humans, which then created an avatar for it to possess.
The Falling Devil is also a Primal Devil, just like the Aging Devil. Primal Devils are said to be “transcendent” beings who have even been shown to be on a level above the Four Horsemen Devils. In other words, the Falling Devil’s summoning ritual to Earth establishes that some Devils are so powerful that they may need mass human sacrifice to be summoned. Thus, it’s possible that the almighty Death Devil may need a similar summoning ritual or process.
It’s also worth mentioning that some fans theorize the Death Devil to be a Primal Fear Devil. If this does turn out to be the case, then the Death Devil is surely powerful enough to require a mass sacrifice for its summoning. Thus, the Aging Devil may be working for the Death Devil and planning to use the 10,000 children as a means to summon or create an avatar for Death. This would then allow her to come to Earth, thus fulfilling Nostradamus' prophecy.
Death Devil is surely on the level of power to require such a massive sacrifice as well. The Chainsaw Man manga previously saw Control Devil Nayuta describe her as the most powerful of the Four Horsemen Devils. With this in mind, her power is surely comparable to that of a Primal Fear Devil if she isn’t already one herself. While Control Devil Makima and War Devil Yoru struggled in their encounters with Primal Devils, they were still able to hold their ground.
This also explains why the Aging Devil would need to sacrifice itself; for Public Safety and the Japanese Government to sign off on such a major sacrifice, the rewards would need to be tantamount to the sacrifice made. Thus, the Aging Devil’s sacrifice would be the only way to actually convince Public Safety to go through with the plan. While still unconfirmed, it seems very likely that this is the Aging Devil’s true intent in cooperating with Public Safety.
