Chainsaw Man crafted a unique pairing dynamic through Asa Mitaka and Yoru. Starting out as human, Asa was changed completely following a run-in with the War Devil, Yoru. Now, separating them is nearly impossible considering how much the story plays on them coexisting. Alongside Denji and Pochita, the complex Asa-Yoru relationship drives the plot.
As seen, Asa's quiet, hesitant and unsocialable personality mixed with low self-esteem is in contrast to Yoru’s more dominant and impulsive nature, thereby weaving together an intriguing inner conflict and character development. As a pair, they represent a mix of humanity and Devilish inhumanity, a very real duality in a Devil-infested world.
Hence, considering this, it is unikely that Chainsaw Man will separate them at any point in the story. Not only is their relationship symbolic, Asa quite literally needs Yoru to live. Separating them might downplay Asa’s character arc and lessen the thematic tension of Human-Devil partnerships as their connection is crucial to the overall narrative.
Disclaimer: This article is speculative in nature.
It might just be obvious why Chainsaw Man will keep Asa and Yoru together
A recently surfaced Chainsaw Man theory states that the series cannot and will not take Asa Mitaka and Yoru away from each other. As mentioned, the story cleverly built them as a unique pairing and at this point, it is unlikely they will be separated. The theory speculates that Yoru's possession of Asa's body is what's keeping the latter alive at the moment.
It draws a parallel to the Denji-Pochita relationship or contract - Pochita sacrifices himself to become Denji’s heart and revive him as a Devil-Human Hybrid. Later, it is revealed that Pochita communicated with Denji internally, wishing to live more of Denji's dreams with him in exchange for being his heart. Similarly, Asa and Yoru forged a contract wherein Yoru saved Asa's life in exchange for her body.
In both cases, it is their respective Devil contracts that seems to be keeping the protagonist duo alive. So, in the absence of Yoru, Asa is realistically a walking corpse. Further, the theory states that when Yoru told Asa that she would return her body to her once Chainsaw Man was defeated, Yoru was likely "lying by omission".
Can Asa Mitaka and Yoru be separated?
To begin with, Asa was in a similar situation to Denji when she formed a contract with Yoru, i.e., near death. It was this dire circumstance which Yoru leveraged, promising to save Asa in exchange for control of her body. It was soon revealed by Yoru herself that she kept Asa alive by leaving half of her brain intact, meaning that there were two entities in a singular body.
However, unlike Denji and Pochita, Yoru resides within Asa, able to seize control, and exist as a separate entity altogether. It is just the common body that they share. So, it can be said that Asa's life is not strictly dependent on Yoru for her survival. Theoretically speaking, the former just might be able to survive if Yoru were to leave her body or maybe even die. But how this happens is a complete mystery.
Again, in the former case, Pochita acts as Denji's heart and Denji cannot live without that. As seen in the manga, at most, Denji can survive for a short time without his heart, running on blood. But if his heart were to be destroyed or removed entirely, it is highly likely that he would die. This doesn't seem to be the case for Asa and Yoru. So, it might be that Asa could survive without Yoru.
Final Thoughts
To conclude, despite debuting all the way back in chapter 98, fans still do not know the complete details of Asa and Yoru's contract. True enough, Yoru saved Asa in exchange for bodily control and left of her brain intact. But does this mean that Asa is functioning with half a brain or the body's brain is one half Asa and one half Yoru?
Again, the theory does hold weight when it says that Yoru is "lying by omission" - she might be intentionally leaving out a crucial detail or two to protect her own skin. Until their full contract is revealed, facts can only be speculated. Moreover, Chainsaw Man will likely retain the Asa-Yoru pairing given their dual natures, contrasting personalities, complex dynamic and essential yet distinct bond.
