With an apparent lull in Seiko Ayase and Momo Ayase/Ken “Okarun” Takakura’s activities, many expected Dandadan chapter 180 to focus on Count Saint-Germain likewise. Officially released on Monday, January 6, 2025, the issue instead shifted focus back to Momo and Okarun’s group, seeing them make efforts to identify Kouki Yukishiro’s blackmailer.

However, Dandadan chapter 180 took an unexpected route, even continuing from this shocking focus, revealing the identity of Seiko Ayase’s other attacker, the one controlling the jiangshi. The issue also sees Count Saint-Germain put Okarun into his indirect sights again, introducing a new yokai in the installment’s final panels.

Dandadan chapter 180 introduces two new threats closer to Okarun and Momo than they realize

Dandadan chapter 180 begins with Kouki Yukishiro exiting her classroom, shocked to see Okarun, Momo, Aira Shiratori, Jin “Jiji” Enjoji, Vamola, and Kinta Sakata, who stares right at Kouki before she walks away. Kinta explains that three teachers - the nurse Queen, Class E’s teacher Miss Adachi, and Sanjome - approached Kouki during her last break.

Kinta notes that Sanjome asked her to tell him what “secret she spotted,” prompting Momo to point out how suspicious that sounds. Okarun adds that Sanjome asked him a similar question, prompting Kinta to tell them not to be hasty. He adds that Sanjome is strange to begin with, appearing and disappearing like a phantom. He also says they can’t make good guesses on preconceived notions, adding that he didn’t say anything to anyone about powers or knives.

Dandadan chapter 180 sees Aira go to grab Kinta’s glasses so she can see the footage, but they begin changing shape in her hand. He explains it’s due to them being made of nano skin, which will change according to the mental images of the person touching them. Likewise, they morph into the shape of Okarun’s classes, leading to a quick scene that reestablishes Aira’s affection for him.

The focus then shifts to Miss Adachi walking back into the school, revealing she went out due to her mother not feeling well when asked where she was by the apparent gym teacher. Revealed to be named Murakami, he tells her to let him know if he can do anything to help before inviting her to the basketball singles mixer. She declines due to not being an athlete, prompting him to tell her to let him know if she changes her mind.

As she walks away, Dandadan chapter 180 sees Adachi pull out her phone, where she texts the Operator about her failure as she’s revealed to be the one controlling the jiangshi. The focus then shifts to a boy named Hase in the school, who tries to speak with some girls but is shooed away. However, he sees they’re texting about finding Okarun more attractive lately, which shocks and upsets Hase.

He grabs one of the girls as they walk away but they get angry, prompting him to attempt to jokingly insult them. However, it’s clear that this isn’t how it was received by those in the area, so he walks away and says he’s so sick of Okarun. It’s revealed that he’s the one who lost to Okarun in a race at gym class, pulling out a white-bladed kozuka knife as he thinks on this.

Dandadan chapter 180 then starts a brief flashback to after Hase lost the race, where he hears a voice talking to him that only he can hear. The voice appeals to Hase’s desire to beat Okarun, saying he only lost because Okarun has special powers. He hands him a white handled and a black handled kozuka knife, telling him to hurt himself with the white one to gain powers. He then instructs Hase to get Okarun to admit defeat before taking his power with the black kozuka.

Hase doesn’t accept initially, but it’s revealed that he took the kozuka knives anyway. He calls himself crazy and says it must be a joke before hurting himself with the white Kozuka. Nothing happens initially, causing him to call it an elaborate prank and himself an idiot for falling for it. However, the issue ends with a frightened Hase realizing it wasn’t a prank, as a seemingly female yokai appears behind him and is looking directly at him.

In summation

Dandadan chapter 180 does a good job of moving the current arc’s narrative forward in a way fans weren’t expecting. Likewise, it seems Okarun and co will have to fight off both Ayase and Adachi when Count Saint-Germain next chooses to unleash them on Okarun. Before that, however, fans can expect the next issue to at least partially focus on Hase and his new powers, briefly introducing them before working to set up his fight with Okarun.
