Dandadan episode 2 sees Okarun’s powers activate in the pair’s second extraterrestrial encounter
Brief episode recap
Dandadan episode 2 began with a funny scene seeing Momo in complete disbelief that Okarun’s name was Ken Takakura. This led to Turbo Granny’s curse taking over Okarun’s body again briefly before she resumed the use of her powers on him. She then said he was not allowed to say his name as they began walking home, returning to Momo’s house as day broke.
Momo brought Okarun to her house to get help from her grandmother regarding his current condition. However, when he tried to enter the property, he was lit ablaze due to a barrier erected at the torii gate entrance. Momo removed the barrier from the gate, which allowed Okarun to pass through without any harm.
Dandadan episode 2 then saw the pair head inside as Momo made fun of Okarun’s frizzy hair. However, Momo’s grandmother wasn’t home, prompting the pair to head upstairs where Momo began changing. However, she couldn’t close the door while doing so since this would cause Turbo Granny’s curse to take over his body again.
After she changed, she gave him some of her clothes as they discussed that he was missing a certain part of his body due to the Turbo Granny’s curse. She asked to see once he confirmed this was the case, but he refused because doing so would be inappropriate. The two then bickered about how this mess all started, but Okarun quickly became vulnerable.
Dandadan episode 2 saw him explain that he thought Momo approaching him would be his only chance to make a friend. Not wanting it to slip by, he chased after her and the situation unfolded as fans saw. He then apologized for roping her into such danger and said that she could ignore him again when this was all over.
However, Momo rejected this, calling it annoying that he assumes other peoples’ feelings without asking. She added that the reason he didn’t have friends was because he shoved them away. Momo then went out into the hall next to him and told him they could discuss the occult like normal. Okarun wiped tears out of his eyes silently before insulting Momo and starting a joking fight between them.
Dandadan episode 2 saw this interrupted by someone ringing a doorbell. However, Momo then explained that they have one doorbell for humans and another for evil spirits. She realized that it must be an evil spirit since she had taken the torii gate barrier down. She then decided to go put the talisman for the barrier back up while Okarun fled the property to not be injured.
However, when they went outside, they saw nothing aside from black smoke in the sky. As they noticed this, the surrounding area transformed into walls to trap them on the plot of land. Momo then realized she was bleeding, as Okarun collapsed to the ground with blood pouring out of his mouth and nose. Momo recognized that the black fog in the area was the cause of this before seeing what appeared to be a massive spirit.
Dandadan episode 2 saw the spirit call them evil people who broke a promise, attacking them after saying so. The two dodged the attack and began running, with the spirit giving chase. Like the aliens, it demanded their reproductive organs, making it clear that this was an alien. Okarun specifically called it a Flatwoods Monster, named after the United States town where it was first sighted.
The Flatwoods Monster then began expelling even more black fog, as they deduced it must be in league with the Serpoians. The two then found a hiding spot, where Okarun asked Momo to try and let the curse transform everything on his body but his head. However, the Flatwoods Monster found them as they discussed this, destroying their hiding spot and exposing them.
Dandadan episode 2 showed Momo as hesitant to attempt this, but Okarun eventually convinced her. Just as the Flatwoods Monster’s attack went to hit them, Okarun transformed into a hybrid version of himself and Turbo Granny. While he had significant power, his personality also did a 180 as he became very pessimistic.
As Momo bickered with him over this change, he went to confront the Flatwoods Monster, effortlessly severing several of its fingers. However, he quickly began throwing up blood, suggesting that his body couldn’t handle the stress caused by wielding Turbo Granny’s power. This caused him to detransform, with Momo saving him just as he was about to be killed.
As the pair argued about what to do next, Dandadan episode 2 saw them realize the Flatwoods Monster was sumo wrestling. Okarun then transformed for a final time, attacking the monster’s legs while Momo used her psychic powers to force the alien’s hand to touch the ground. This caused it to suddenly disappear, but the monster was able to survive by getting back on its feet.
Momo was then pounded into the wall where the torii gate was, clearly injured but still antagonizing the alien. It was eventually revealed that this was her plan all along to put the talisman back on the torii gate. She used her psychic powers to pull Okarun towards her as she did this, saving him likewise.
The monster was then lit ablaze and defeated, returning the pair to reality where no destruction had befallen Momo’s house. However, she passed out almost immediately after, resulting in Okarun’s curse running free. Dandadan episode 2 ended by teasing that Okarun, having now fully lost control of himself, was about to eat and kill Momo.
In summation
While Dandadan episode 2 did spend some time focusing on Okarun and Momo’s budding friendship, it primarily showcased the pair in action yet again. Likewise, fans got a taste of what the “battle” formula of this battle shonen series will be moving forward. The episode also teases an exciting follow-up next week, which could very well end with Momo’s premature demise at Okarun’s unwilling hands.
