Demon Lord 2099 episode 1 recap
Around 500 years ago, the Kingdom of Alneath witnessed a ravaging war between two sides: mortals with limited lifespans and the immortals, freed from the shackles of death. During the war, the hero of the mortals, Gram, slayed the Demon Lord, Veltol. Since the Demon Lord was immortal, he knew he would eventually return one day.
Rightly so, after 500 years, the Demon Lord gets revived by his subordinate, Machina Soleige. Being revived, Veltol wants to dominate once again. However, he learns the harsh reality that it's 2099 and the world has changed a lot.
Machina informs Veltol that during his absence, Alneath underwent a phenomenon called Fantasion and merged with a planet named Earth. The initial years were challenging, as civil wars had become a frequent affair.
Yet, eventually, things settled down, and Alneath's magic joined with Earth's industry to create magical engineering called the Magineering. Veltol is overwhelmed to see 2099's Shinjuku, a cyberpunk city. The Demon Lord asks Machina about the Six Dark Peers.
Although she doesn't know about the whereabouts of four members, Machina tells Veltol how Zenol, one of the Dark Peers, sacrificed himself to help her escape. The Demon Lord then enquires about Marcus of the Bloody Arts. Interestingly, Machina dodges the question.
She leaves the scene for a while, which prompts Veltol to look around the city. He observes a girl tampering with ads on the giant screen and finds out how she can demonstrate aether magic to hack into systems. Veltol then asks the girl whether she knows about Marcus, which she does.
The Demon Lord follows the girl's directions and arrives at Marcus' office. However, he is disillusioned to find his Dark Peer harboring animosity toward him. Marcus also reveals how Veltol is powerless in front of mankind's invention, Familia, which lets people use spontaneous magic.
The Dark Peer uses it to drive away Veltol from his office. Eventually, Machina finds the Demon Lord in an injured state and takes him to her home. However, instead of residing in a lavish castle, Machina lives in a single room, with almost no space for comfort. Veltol empathizes with his subordinate's struggles. The episode ends with Machina crying profusely while hugging the Demon Lord.
