Demon Slayer fans shouldn't expect any realism at all, and Mitsuri's character design proves it

Anime series are renowned for providing people an escape from reality, often delving into the worlds of fantasy, exaggeration, and stylized visuals, of which Demon Slayer is the perfect example. Koyoharu Gotouge's magnum opus epitomizes this trend by focusing on humanity's never-ending battle against demons.

While viewers often appreciate a touch of realism here and there to feel somewhat relatable or grounded, the Demon Slayer series largely departs from this. A recent topic of discussion that ended up diving the Demon Slayer fandom, was specifically about their expectations for realism from the series.

However, if the fantastical premise of the series is not enough to convince fans of its detachment from reality, then perhaps the character design of the Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji, would be the perfect way for fans to realize that they shouldn't expect any realism from the series at all.

Demon Slayer: How Mitsuri Kanroji's character design defies all expectations of realism from the series

Despite her appearance, the Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji has consistently been shown to be one of the strongest and fiercest fighters in the entirety of the series. Her deceptively muscular build and immense strength have shocked people throughout her life.

Another aspect of her that surprised quite a lot of people was the sheer quantity of food she consumed in a day, which was said to be enough to feed multiple families.

While explaining her character's backstory, the mangaka, Koyoharu Gotouge pointed out that Mitsuri had a "special body". Apparently, her muscle density was eight times that of a normal person, which means that instead of giving her a slender figure, she should have been drawn as an excessively muscular woman.

Lately, some fans on social media have taken issue with Mitsuri's character design in the series. According to them, if the series were a bit more realistic, Mitsuri would have had a chubbier disposition than her current state, since it only makes sense given the amount of food she consumes in a day.

On the other hand, there have been fans who refuted this claim, pointing out that Mitsuri is an active member of the Demon Slayer Corps and a Hashira at that. Therefore, it would only make sense for her to burn off the majority of the calories she consumes during the day while battling demons at night.

However, even after taking both sides of the argument into consideration, it remains an undisputed fact that Demon Slayer is the last series that fans should be looking at for realistic elements. This can be proven just by looking at Mitsuri's character design since there is no possible way for any human to look like her while having 8 times the muscle density of a normal person.

Given that Demon Slayer is primarily a fantasy action series that focuses on humanity's never-ending war against demons and consists of fantastical elements like immortal demons, talking animals, and breathing techniques, people at least expect the series to be a bit more realistic when it comes to human anatomy.

At the end of the day, however, fans should remember not to take fiction too seriously since it is primarily a means of entertainment. Looking for and arguing about realistic elements in an anime about immortal demons is, by all means, extremely unnecessary. As such, it shouldn't hold much importance to people, as they should simply enjoy these works of fiction with a suspension of disbelief.
