Demon Slayer: Fan theory explains the reason behind Tanjiro’s black-colored blade
As per the discussion on the r/KimetsuNoYaiba subreddit, fans have reason to believe that the blade's color could have been the manga author’s way of foreshadowing an important detail. The detail in question is Tanjiro’s ability to use multiple Breathing Techniques in the series. This is quite unique because most people identify a Breathing Technique they’re most suited to and spend years mastering it.
In Tanjiro Kamado’s case, he started training and learning the Water Breathing Technique. However, his lineage also allowed him access to techniques from the Breath of the Sun. Later in the manga, he perfected all forms of this technique, which was crucial in helping the Demon Slayer Corps win against demons.
As seen in the Swordsmith Village arc, he also managed to utilize a technique from Thunder Breathing, which allowed him to catch up to the demon when his body was failing him.
Suppose we assign a color to each of the Breathing Techniques that could give us a clue about the color of Tanjiro’s blade. Red could represent Breath of the Sun, Blue could represent Water Breathing, and Yellow could represent Thunder Breathing. When we mix all these colors, we get the color black. Koyoharu Gotouge could have foreshadowed this little detail in the anime's first season by revealing the color of Tanjiro’s blade.
The only thing we know about the black-colored blade is that it was considered a bad omen. This could be due to the extremely short lifespan, all thanks to Kokushibo and Muzan’s mission to destroy Sun Breathing users. The black-colored blade could have been an indication of the swordsman’s affinity for Sun Breathing. However, this could have also been used to indicate Tanjiro’s unique ability to use multiple Breathing Techniques in the animanga series.
Another theory states that the reason the blade is black in color is due to its heat-related properties. In the color spectrum, each color has unique physical properties. Colors can absorb and reflect heat, depending on the color. Black is a color that best absorbs heat, which in turn could be a connection to the Breath of the Sun. These are some reasons why Tanjiro’s blade could be black.
