The Demon Slayer manga has provided fans with plenty of extremely powerful characters. Oftentimes, their power stems from certain deep-rooted issues that they faced during their childhood. Most Hashira have experienced some of the most traumatic events that one could go through. However, they managed to persevere and became some of the strongest and most respected elements in society.
Mitsuri Kanroji’s backstory might not be as sad as some of the other Hashira in the organization, especially when compared to the likes of Obanai Iguro’s backstory. However, a closer look at their pasts makes it clear as to why they’re perfect for each other as romantic partners.

Demon Slayer: Analyzing Mitsuri and Obanai’s backstories to understand why they’re great romantic partners for each other
Obanai Iguro’s backstory was gutwrenching, as he was tortured for months on end by his own family members and a demon. His family worshipped a Serpent demon and they offered Obanai as a sacrifice to the demon since he was born with heterochromia. He was treated differently due to his appearance.
It led to him being caged and forced to eat extravagant food that was kept there at all times. It was pitch black in the cage, and he could feel the gaze of the demon on him at all times. The Serpent demon also scarred his mouth to make his appearance resemble the demon's. His nightmare ended when Gyomei Himejima took down the demon and saved him.
Mitsuri Kanroji was monstrously strong and the men she wanted to marry were repulsed by it. They didn’t like the fact that her hair was pink and that she had a massive appetite. Before she fully accepted herself, she dyed her hair black, changed her eating habits, and never displayed her strength. Mitsuri was also treated differently due to her appearance.
Those who have read the Demon Slayer manga will know that Obanai fell in love with Mitsuri the moment he saw her. In fact, he even made stockings for her that matched her hair color. This was one of Mitsuri’s biggest insecurities that she had to overcome to fully accept herself. On the other hand, Obanai believed that Mitsuri deserved better since he came from a family of thieves.
However, Mitsuri didn’t care about his origins and loved him dearly. Despite having gone through some of the worst things in their lives, they loved each other and embraced one another's insecurities.
Obanai didn’t like his scar, but Mitsuri Kanroji loves scars, which was seen in the first season of the Demon Slayer anime. Mitsuri wanted to hide her strength, but Obanai was someone who not only valued but also respected Mitsuri for her strength. He always held strong people in high regard.
Conclusion
The backstories in the Demon Slayer series highlight the insecurities and the negative aspects of their lives. However, the Serpent Hashira and the Love Hashira accepted themselves and their partner’s insecurities, loving each other for who they are.
Although their personalities are polar opposites, they complement each other well. Their experiences have shaped who they are today, allowing them to love each other wholeheartedly.
