Zenitsu Agatsuma from the Demon Slayer series has garnered a massive fanbase over the past couple of years. This is because he is a unique character and doesn’t particularly have the same traits that most other demon hunters have in this particular series.
He is someone who has constantly exhibited cowardice, which made fans hate him at first. However, he soon gained everyone’s respect when he took on some of the strongest demons in the series. The final episode of the latest season also wowed the entire fanbase.
This is because he was someone who always fought when he was unconscious. But this time, when fell into the Infinity Castle, he had an extremely serious expression, and he was completely awake. A small portion of the fanbase has presented the community with a theory and talked about how the demon hunter could potentially have a medical condition.

Demon Slayer: Fan theory explains how Zenitsu could have a medical condition in the animanga series
Zenitsu Agatsuma is someone who was always afraid of confrontation and fights. He never really enjoyed it and he also detested every second of his training. The time spent doing something he hates could have been a form of trauma. He was lucky to train under Jigoro Kuwajma, who was an excellent teacher and had a lot of affection for Zenitsu in his heart. But that doesn’t take away the fact that Zenitsu forced himself into training.
The theory proposed by a fan (u/Dry-Landscape-3942) on Reddit speculated that Zenitsu could potentially have Split Personality Disorder. This is a theory that seems interesting as it attempts to connect Zenitsu’s behavior with a medical condition. One of the symptoms is that a person has two different personalities. There is a lot of dramatization in the shonen genre as a whole and therefore, it becomes hard to understand whether or not Zenitsu has Split Personality Disorder.
However, it might be worth noting that the fainting and being able to fight could be characterized as a dissociative episode. There is a clear difference in his personality when we look at his behavior before he faints and after his instincts take over. One second he is a coward and in a matter of seconds, we can see his courageous and serious side.
As interesting a theory as this might be, this might not really be the case because there’s not a comprehensive list of symptoms for us to analyze. There simply isn’t enough for us to reach a conclusion and therefore, the theory cannot be proven until the manga author makes a statement on this. Zenitsu could potentially have Split Personality Disorder and if he does, it certainly isn’t the right characterization of the condition.
It could also be that Zenitsu does not have Split Personality Disorder in particular and only experiences dissociative episodes whenever he is in combat. The only time this doesn’t happen is during the fight against Kaigaku, where he fights the Upper Moon demon without losing his consciousness. We urge the fanbase to wait for the manga artist to provide his input on this topic and confirm the possibility of Zenitsu having the aforementioned medical condition.
