Over the last week, the community for author and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga series has had its collective nose to the grindstone, trying to figure out what’s next. The general consensus that most of the fandom has agreed with is that Denji is trying to throw up a Devil that can help him and Asa Mitaka/War Devil Yoru escape the Aging Devil’s world.
Likewise, many have landed on the Octopus Devil being the most likely candidate, given that Pochita recently ate it and fans know it has teleportation powers. While certainly a logical conclusion, there’s another option that fits with Fujimoto’s unpredictable writing style and also allows Chainsaw Man to achieve some significant worldbuilding.
One of Chainsaw Man’s most enigmatic Devils may be what Denji throws up in chapter 185
In Part 1 of Fujimoto’s manga series, fans saw Control Devil Makima mention to Denji that Pochita has erased many different devils that only she can remember the names of. She mentions many that are analogous to real-world history, such as the Nazi Devil and AIDS Devil, but also mentions fantastical concepts. Two of the most notable are a group of four Devils representing paths other than death at a life’s end and the Sixth Sense Devil.
One of these five total Devils seems most likely to be what Denji throws up when considering the series’ narrative and worldbuilding overall. For starters, fans (and Yoru herself) still don’t know if War Devil Yoru’s plan to make Pochita throw up the Nuclear Weapons Devil can truly work. This is due to questions surrounding how long it takes Pochita to fully erase a Devil after consuming it, as well as whether or not a fully erased Devil can be thrown up.
All five of these Devils can also be related to the current predicament Denji and Asa Mitaka/Yoru are in. One of four possible conclusions other than death would obviously relate to the Aging Devil, who represents the concept of aging that goes hand-in-hand with death. It’s also theorized that the Aging Devil is actually working for the Death Devil, further justifying one of these four Devils as being the one Denji throws up.
The Sixth Sense Devil would also relate to recent events in Chainsaw Man that saw other Devils linked to the senses erased, such as Mouth and Ears. The Bitterness Devil can also be included here, as bitterness is directly related to the sensation of taste. Likewise, the Sixth Sense Devil’s return would give Denji and Asa their sixth sense back, which may allow them to fully escape the Aging Devil’s world.
These five options are also made more likely by the nature of the additional lore and worldbuilding it would provide to the series. Obviously, those aspects relating to Denji are mentioned above, but it would also provide lore and worldbuilding in a much more general sense. It could also recontextualize upcoming events and battles, making them more enthralling than they’d otherwise be.
Final thoughts
While the above is certainly speculative, it tracks with recent events in the series, as well as the direction the story appears to be currently headed in. Thankfully, fans shouldn’t have to wait long for an answer, with chapter 185 likely to reveal Denji’s plan after its official release on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 12 am Japanese Standard Time.
