Murata is a supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, a member of the Corps and an ally of Tanjiro Kamado, the protagonist. His family was killed by demons, leaving him without living relatives, prompting him to join the Corps. He is from the same batch as Giyu Tomioka.

During the final episode of the Hashira Training arc, when Kibutsuji Muzan visits the Ubayashiki manor to kill Kagaya Ubayashiki. Muzan is ambushed by the Hashiras and many other Demon Slayers who try to finish him off.

That's when giant doors open below them, through which everyone, including Murata, fall through to enter the Infinity Castle. According to the arc, he does not engage in any battles.

After completing training with Hashira, Murata was on night patrol with several of his peers when sliding doors mysteriously appeared beneath them and opened. Murata, unable to resist, fell into the Infinity Castle, where an unusual gravitational pull brought him to a platform. As he stood up, he gazed in fear at the new and treacherous environment he and his peers were about to confront.

During the Infinity Castle arc, Murata does not engage in any battles. Instead, he focuses on rescuing other fighters, including Zenitsu and Yushiro, amidst the chaos. Later, after the fortress collapses, Giyu Tomioka asks Murata to carry an injured Tanjiro to safety and attend to his wounds. He and Takeuchi are later seen shedding tears of joy, relieved that the battle has finally ended.

Murata participated in the same Final Selection as Giyu Tomioka and Sabito. He survived thanks to Sabito, who defeated nearly all the demons on the mountain before succumbing to a particularly large and vengeful demon. Before his death, Sabito entrusted Giyu to Murata, who looked after him when he regained consciousness.

During the Mount Natagumo arc, Murata received orders from a Kasugai Crow to head to Mt. Natagumo with nine other colleagues. Upon entering the forest, the group was suddenly attacked, with all of them turning on each other. Murata fled but soon encountered Tanjiro Kamado and Inosuke Hashibira.

Despite his initial fear and belief that a Hashira should have been sent, Murata joined forces with them. He held off the controlled Demon Slayers, allowing Tanjiro and Inosuke to locate and kill the demon responsible.

After the incident at Mt. Natagumo, Murata, one of the few survivors, reported to the Hashira. He faced their disappointment and anger over the deaths of many of his peers.

Later, he reunited with Tanjiro at the Butterfly Mansion, where he met Zenitsu Agatsuma. Murata joked about the harsh criticism he received from the Hashira, only to be joined by the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho, prompting him to quickly bow and leave.

During the Hashira Training arc, Murata met up with Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke for training with Gyomei Himejima. His ten days of experience helped guide them, sharing tips on staying warm and maintaining concentration. Right after his training was complete, he fell into the Infinity Castle during a night patrol.
