Does Uraume die in Jujutsu Kaisen? Fate of Sukuna's subordinate, explained

Jujutsu Kaisen's Uraume has always been an intriguing character and serves as a recurring antagonist in the series. The character initially sided with Kenjaku in the ploy to seal away Gojo Satoru and revive Ryomen Sukuna. Also known as "The Frozen Star", they debuted in chapter 53 of the manga and episode 21 of the anime.

After 267 long chapters, Sukuna was defeated in chapter 268 and with it, Uraume saw no reason to continue fighting and hence sacrificed themselves as well. Prior to that, Uraume was facing off against Kinji Hakari in what was looking like a deadlock, with both sorcerers equally skilled and neither giving the other any room to edge ahead in battle.

Uraume is a Curse User from about a thousand years ago. Alongside Sukuna, they were alive during the Heian Era and served as the King of Curses' direct subordinate, being the one to attend to him whenever needed. At some point, Uraume was incarnated through one Shiori Himi to come to exist in the modern day. They sided with Kenjaku in the plan to seal Gojo and revive Sukuna.

Upon being successful, Uraume rejoined Sukuna as the pair prepared the Demon King's new body and themselves for the fight ahead. Uraume is seen in the series as clam and stoic, not speaking much and doing only what is necessary. Uraume's trait lies their loyalty to Sukuna, evident when they moved to greet their master after his fight against Jogo and later when Sukuna took over Megumi Fushiguro's body.

Not much is revealed or shown of Uraume throughout the course of Jujutsu Kaisen's 265+ chapters. They make scattered appearances here and there, mostly in a supporting role for Sukuna. Before Sukuna, they were seen mostly with Kenjaku as he schemed to seal away the Strongest Sorcerer of the Modern Day.

After Sukuna took over Megumi's body, Uraume prepared the Bath for the former to gain greater control over their new vessel. Then, during the Shinjuku Showdown, Uraume found their hands full dealing with Hakari. While expectations were high for this bout, creator Gege Akutami chose to keep it at a minimum with just a few fight Uraume-Hakari scenes added in between Sukuna vs Team Jujutsu High.

At the end, in chapter 268, Sukuna was separated from Megumi's body and reduced to a small mass that slowly disintegrated. The same happened to Uraume, i.e., it was pointless to continue with Sukuna defeated and hence, they too slowly disintegrated and passed away.

Will Uraume return in Jujutsu Kaisen?

With just a single chapter left, there is little to no chance that Uraume will return in Jujutsu Kaisen. Unless Akutami decides on a second part where Sukuna might make a possible return, Uraume has completed their time in the series. Rightfully so, their role was such that it was tied to Sukuna being alive.

Uraume's origins are still a mystery, with the only known fact being that they were a Curse User during Sukuna's time. Uraume was permitted to stand by the Demon King's side due to their capability as a jujutsu sorcerer and their skill an exceptional chef, who could cook humans. Apart from this, not much else has been divulged unless Akutami plans to reveal more information about them in the final chapter.
