In Bleach, Yoruichi Shihoin is a uniquely designed character who stands out as one of the series’ most powerful and skilled. Her reputation for possessing breathtaking speed, being a master at hand-to-hand combat, and prowess in Kido precede her. However, even though she is quite formidable in battle, there has been long-standing speculation about whether or not she has a Bankai.

To put it plainly, Bleach has not explicitly shown it but suggests that Yoruichi, being a former captain of the Gotei 13, has achieved Bankai and possesses a Zanpakuto. As seen in the manga, Yoruichi prefers to use her Shunko techniques and physical prowess over her Zanpakuto abilities. This has further discussion on if she even needs a Bankai or will achieve Shikai instead.

In Yoruichi's case, her weapons resemble a kodachi or wakizashi, which she carries horizontally behind her on her lower back. Her lack of usage of her Zanpakuto has been one of the series' lingering mysteries. The manga has not yet shown Yoruichi releasing her Zanpakuto or using its Shikai or Bankai.

To begin with, Yoruichi can shapeshift into a black cat at will. It has not been revealed how she gained this ability but she has certainly had it for over 100 years. The transformation has no time limit, allowing her to remain as a cat for as long as she desires.

Yoruichi is also considered a master of Hoho, earning her the nickname of "Flash Goddess." Her proficiency at Shunpo allows her to leave after-images when she moves, appearing to be in several places at once. Moreover, as a former Onmitsukido Commander-in-Chief, Yoruichi is exceptionally skilled at Hakuda.

Her skill allows her to use this art almost exclusively as her preferred fighting style, nearly leaving out her Zanpakuto altogether. Yoruichi has also become a Shunko (Hakuda + Kido) master. When in use, this technique covers her back and arms with pressurized Kido, appearing as lightning.

Needless to mention, Yoruichi has even been established as a Kido master. Although she usually uses Shunpo and Hakuda during combat, she often utilizes Kido to better her combat capacity, combining it with other fighting techniques. Aside from all this, Yoruichi has enhanced physical prowess and is an expert assassin and tactician.

Returning to the crux of the matter, Yoruichi has been assumed to have achieved Bankai as she was once a Gotei 13 captain. However, she has never used it or mentioned it. In fact, there is nothing known of both her Bankai and Shikai. As such, the fandom has woven numerous theories about the same.

Creator Tite Kubo seems to be especially silent on the subject, which only added fuel to the fire for fan theories. Although she never uses or references her Bankai in Bleach, her skill level hints that she might have chosen a different path, separate from the distinct techniques fitting her personal strengths.

Such ambiguity has done well to keep fans guessing and leaves room for more speculation regarding her true power. It might be possible that she possesses even greater latent potential than what is revealed in the series.
