Dragon Ball Daima recently revealed even more lore in episode 11 as Neva engaged with the party and shed some light into the Namekians' pilgrimage from the Demon Realm. Moreover, as the older Namekian began to talk to Piccolo, there was mention of the latter's father, Katatz, much to the confusion of most of the fandom.

While Katatz was mentioned during the events of the Namek saga in the original series, many people have forgotten, and the mention of Piccolo's father in Dragon Ball Daima has confused the fandom regarding his origin. Most people assumed for years that he was the son of the Demon King Piccolo, which is why he was called Piccolo Jr. in the early days of his time in the manga, but it is a bit more complicated.

The Katatz mention in Dragon Ball Daima confuses people regarding Piccolo's origin

During the most recent episode of Daima, the older Namekian Neva chose to join Goku and his party in their journey for the Demon Realm Dragon Balls. While talking with the characters, he mentions how Piccolo reminds him of Kataz and the latter confirms that man was his father, leading many in the fandom into a spiral of confusion.

Some people thought that Katatz was the real name of the Demon King Piccolo but they are separate characters and the former was named-dropped by the Grand Guru in the Namek saga in the original manga. Moreover, there was also confusion about how this Namekian could be Piccolo's father when the Demon King was the one who birthed him in his final moments before dying against Goku, hence the name Piccolo Jr.

The thing is that Piccolo Jr. is treated as both the son and reincarnation of the Demon King Piccolo, which is why Kami, the villain's good side, didn't die when Goku killed him. But for all intents and purposes, the Piccolo fans know and love is an extension of the Demon King with his own thoughts, feelings, and memories, with Katatz being the father of the original Nameless Namekian who arrived at Earth centuries ago.

While this comment in Dragon Ball Daima surprised many, it cannot be considered new lore or a retcon since it's only a mention already shown in the original series. If anything, it's a little nod author Akira Toriyama made to that small detail in this series, although it also highlights the confusing origin of Piccolo.

The Piccolo most people know is the son of Katatz but is also the reincarnation of the evil side of the Nameless Namekian and merged with Kami, the good side, during the Android saga. All of this makes it quite understandable that fans are confused, especially considering that he already merged with Nail during the events of the Namek saga, making his current status even more bizarre.

"To everyone who hasn't watched og dragon ball King piccolo is not kataz kami and king piccolo used to be one they split up and we got kami and king piccolo then our piccolo merged back with kami so piccolo is referring to the father of the nameless namekian not piccolo daimao," someone said.
"XPLANATION 1. Katatz father of an unknown namekian 2. Unknown Namekian splits into piccolo and Kami 3. Piccolo rebirths into piccolo jr 4. Piccolo (jr) absorbs Kami (+nail) 5. Piccolo is technically now the unknown namekian 6. Katatz is Piccolos father," someone else said.
"Namekian lineage requires a flowchart," another person said.

It is certainly a complicated lineage and one that shocked a lot of fans with the recent Dragon Ball Daima episode. However, it does make sense when considering the character's history in the series and the Namekian lore that has been developed in the franchise.
