Dragon Ball Daima has been a considerable success since the first episode was released. Recent comments showed how a key to its positive reception is capturing the essence of author Akira Toriyama. This is not only referring to this franchise but also to several of the mangaka's work throughout the years, feeling like a love letter to his legacy.

It is also worth pointing out that there is a section of the fandom that hasn't enjoyed this series all that much, which is fine. However, the general perception is that Dragon Ball Daima captures the essence of Toriyama, including projects such as Arale, Blue Dragon, and Dragon Quest. All of this makes it a very enduring series, especially considering the timing of this being the last story the legendary mangaka worked on.

Dragon Ball Daima fans claim this series is a perfect representation of author Akira Toriyama

The general perception is that Daima captures most of the main traits of author Akira Toriyama, such as the recent comedy scenes involving the Minotaur and Goku wanting to go to the bathroom. This is very similar to the humor of the early days of the franchise when the protagonist was a kid and his other hit series, Arale, where the cyborg's strength would lead to comedic moments.

Another distinctive element is the series having Toriyama's modern art style. This was seen by the slimmer and more childlike designs of the likes of Glorio, Degesu, Panzy, and Arinsu. Designs like this one and the Minotaur have some clear influences from Blue Dragon, which might be a more underrated project in the author's trajectory.

Some fans have also pointed out how Goku and his party's adventure throughout the Demon Realm seems to be structured in the way of RPGs videogames. The one in particular they noted was Dragon Quest. It is easy to see the similarities since this series has a lot of exploration, fantastical elements, and fights against random enemies.

Reactions online

However, this doesn't mean that everyone agrees that Dragon Ball Daima is a success, with some fans claiming that it has been underwhelming. Some have felt that the series has a very slow pace and nothing of note tends to happen, with others not liking the fact that Goku goes back to being a kid, as it happened in GT, and not enjoying the lack of a serious tone.

The lack of seriousness and Goku's characterization has always been a divisive topic within the community because a lot of fans miss the more serious and somewhat darker days of the Z portion of the story. In a way, this shows how there are different interpretations of Toriyama's work and how that series has changed so much throughout the years.

"I hate the fact that Goku is an almost 40 years old dad but is talking about fart and poop in 2 or 3 episodes," someone said.
"I’m the opposite. It’s the least I have cared or enjoyed. Ive watched up to episode 3 and I am in no rush to watch on," another person said.

This shows that there is a section in the community that still doesn't have a huge liking for Dragon Ball Daima, which is very valid since everyone is still entitled to their opinion. Moreover, there is a general perception that the series feels like a love letter to the early days of the franchise and captures what Toriyama has been all about as a creator.

"It REALLY feels like the original Dragon Ball, from the beginning up to before King Piccolo. Every episode is a small adventure leading up to the grander adventure, but it never takes itself too seriously or forces the plot to move along," another person said.
"I agree. It feels so much more like Toriyama’s dragon ball than Super does. It’s so much fun to watch," someone else said.
"It feels like a true sequel to the original manga. Toriyama must had a lot of fun writing this," someone said.

Regardless of opinions, it seems that Dragon Ball Daima has been a critical and commercial success and fans are looking forward to seeing more of this project.
