Dragon Ball fans say a Sonic crossover "just needs to happen" after latest fanart

Dragon Ball and Sonic the Hedgehog fans got a chance to unite recently on X because of a fanart that went viral. An artist named @whynarcxso came up with a fanart of Sonic wearing Goku's iconic orange Gi, which led to a lot of reactions, given that this is a crossover between two of the most popular franchises in the world.

This has led to a lot of fans from both fandoms voicing their desire for a crossover between these two franchises. While prospects of that are too complicated to potentially happen, this could have a lot of positive ramifications, especially considering how iconic Goku and Sonic are, and how their fanbases are usually connected.

Recent fanart on X unites the Dragon Ball and Sonic fandom over a possible crossover

As aforementioned, a user on X named @whynarcxso came up with a fanart of Sonic wearing Goku's legendary orange Gi and the four-star Dragon Ball, which is usually associated with the protagonist because it used to belong to his grandpa Gohan.

This crossover, fully capturing the essence of both the character and Goku's iconic outfit, has led to a lot of people now wanting a crossover between these two franchises, which is likely to be a huge success if that were to happen. While it would be a logistical nightmare for the likes of Toei, Shueisha, and Sega to make it a reality, the worldwide appeal of these two franchises could make it worth it.

Interactions between Goku and Sonic would be interesting to see happen, especially because they have been compared from time to time. There is also the recent precedent of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Naruto doing a crossover comic through IDW, so it wouldn't be the first time that a major battle shonen series collaborates with a North American colossus.

There are a lot of similarities between the two franchises. The quest for the Chaos Emeralds is not too different from the early adventures for the Dragon Balls, which shows perhaps why these two franchises usually have fanbases who enjoy both of them. Sonic's iconic golden form, Super Sonic, has oftentimes been compared to Super Saiyan because of the gold aesthetic, and how they both are power-ups for the protagonist.

There are also some similarities between the characters of Vegeta and Shadow. They are not only the main rivals of the protagonists but they also have their own arcs, where they become better people and end up helping the hero for the greater good. Some netizens took to X to comment on the fanart:

"It would be wild if they actually did a collab," someone said.

"he's wearing PANTS also, nice artwork! looks really close to official," another person said.

"I should've known better. Sonic wouldn't be wearing pants if it was official," someone else said.

This fanart is a good example of how passionate fandoms can be, and it also shows there is an audience out there wanting a crossover between these two franchises.
