The Dragon Ball fanbase is rather infamous for having petty disputes regarding the series’ scaling as well as verse battles, which often lead to heated arguments. Another issue is that a sizeable portion of the fanbase seems misinformed about various statistics revolving around their favorite characters. This, paired with their own biases, leads to discussions that don’t really have much value.
A similar case was seen on X (formerly Twitter) when two factions of the fanbases were arguing about who the more powerful character was - Vegeta or Piccolo. What sparked the debate was a singular frame from the Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan.
One frame from this film led a substantial amount of fans to believe that Piccolo was far stronger than the Saiyan Prince at that point in the series.
However, this was a massive misconception for plenty of reasons. A closer look into their feats, as well as the relevance of the film itself, will give readers some insight into who the stronger character was.
Why do Dragon Ball fans believe Piccolo was stronger than Vegeta in DBZ: Broly, and why were they wrong?
This debate seemed to have begun due to a frame from the Dragon Ball Z: Broly movie. This was when the Namekian managed to grab Vegeta by his hair, and this screenshot gave fans the idea that Piccolo was stronger than the Saiyan Prince at the time of his writing. However, this is not the case, and there are a couple of reasons to support this claim. The first reason is that Vegeta, who is known for never giving up, almost did so when he saw Broly transform.
He realized that Broly’s strength and power could not be matched and it was very rare to see him stay mentally defeated. He has more pride and resilience than most characters in the series. Seeing Vegeta in this state, Piccolo grabbed him by his hair and asked him to fight Broly. He didn’t want to see the Prince of Saiyan give up this easily. There was clearly no threat or malicious intent in Piccolo’s actions in this scenario. Therefore, there was no reason for Vegeta to put up a fight.
Assuming Piccolo was stronger than Vegeta, which isn’t the case, this movie is non-canon. While it might be set in the same timeline, these events were not covered in the manga series that was written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. Therefore, any comparison based on the events shown in the movie does not have substance.
Furthermore, analyzing their feats will give fans more insight into why Vegeta is stronger. It is important to note that Super Piccolo, despite his immense power levels and combat abilities, lost to Cell in his first form. When Cell was introduced, he was quite powerful and is still considered to be one of the best villains in the series. However, the Prince of Saiyans fared far better compared to Piccolo.
The Saiyana managed to overwhelm Cell in his second form, which is far superior to the first form in the animanga series. This also clearly proves that Vegeta was stronger. This scaling is used purely because the ones who initiated this debate decided to compare feats in the movie on the basis that it was set in the same timeline. The Broly movie was set just one week before the Cell Games Saga.
