Dragon Ball has been confirmed to be Shueisha's biggest money-maker in Toei's latest fiscal reports, surpassing One Piece in the process. These two franchises have been compared time and time again as the most prominent in the anime industry, so this news is certainly pleasing to hear for fans of mangaka Akira Toriyama's work.
It is also worth pointing out that this is a huge example of the success and staying power of Dragon Ball when the franchise doesn't have a running anime since 2018 and the manga had an abrupt hiatus in April because of Toriyama's passing on March 1 of this year. In that regard, while One Piece is still a commercial juggernaut, it is still in second place at the moment.

Dragon Ball is Shueisha's biggest money-maker and One Piece is in second place
It was recently confirmed in Toei's fiscal reports of the first quarter, which covers from April 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024, that Akira Toriyama's series had a total profit of 5.67 billion yen, making it the biggest money-maker in Shueisha's catalog. In that regard, it was also confirmed that One Piece, another extremely prominent franchise in the company, was in second place with a total of 5.54 billion yen.
This naturally provided fans of the top series with a strong sense of pride because of its commercial success despite not having a running anime since 2018 when Super ended. Furthermore, it was more evidence that the franchise is still extremely viable from a business perspective, which is something that is a topic of discussion at the moment because of a running issue with Toei when it comes to marketing.
Reactions online
This surprised fans because Daima has not been released yet and the manga went on an abrupt hiatus earlier this year due to Akira Toriyama's passing. It also highlights the franchise's enduring popularity and strong commercial fanbase over the years.
On the other hand, it also gave them a sense of pride since One Piece has had a lot of commercial success in recent years in the West, becoming more popular than ever before. In that regard, it shows that Dragon Ball is still anime's biggest franchise to this very day.
"LMFAOOOOO NOTHING HAS EVEN CAME OUT YET AND ITS IN FIRST," someone said.
"They were on cloud 9, when op surpassed db for a brief moment," another person said.
"Daima ain’t even out yet and DB already snatched their chain LMFAOOOOOOO Come outside OP fans," someone else said.
"we have basically no dragon ball content and it's still in first? that's crazy" - Another fan said.
Regardless of personal preferences, there is no denying that these two franchises are two titans of the anime industry and have everlasting staying power.
