Chainsaw Man part 2 started with chapter 98 of the manga, marking the introduction of the War Devil Yoru. Although the earlier chapters of part 2 were received very well by the fandom, the rather slower and much more "uneventful" story compared to part 1 led many fans to believe that part 2 was inferior to the previous part, giving rise to the sentiment of "Chainsaw Man fell off."

While many fans held the belief that the uneventful story was intentional by Fujimoto, to build up tension for high stakes and eventful arcs later in the story, the feeling of inferiority persisted till the most recent chapter. Chapter 178 brought back the unpredicatable and rather dreadful feeling of part 1, with Asa shooting Pochita using the Statue of Liberty, all the way from America to a city in Japan.

Chainsaw Man part 2 no longer feels inferior to part 1

Chainsaw Man chapter 178, titled Gun Goddess, was released on September 24, 2024, and marked a rise in the overall absurdity in the story of part 2. The chapter mainly focused on Yoru using the Statue of Liberty to snipe Pochita from America, with Asa realizing that Yoru had no regard for human life and was an actual devil, due to the collateral damage she was causing.

Although the earlier chapters of part 2 gave rise to a feeling of inferiority, compared to part 1 of the series, nearly all of those concerns were dispelled with the sudden rise in stakes and the overall unpredictable nature of the story in the most recent chapter.

Fan reactions to the latest chapter

Many fans believe that the "fell off" sentiment must have reached Fujimoto directly, leading to the creation of Chainsaw Man chapter 178, which is inarguably one of the best chapters of the entire series, including part 1.

A few other fans expressed how the last few chapters, starting from the reveal of Nayuta's death and Pochita's arrival, leading to the current events, have been simply too absurd, reminding them of part 1.

"FUJIMOTO YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY COOKING," one fan said.
"This run of chapters has been simply absurd," another fan claimed.
"Fujimoto killed Nayuta and locked the f**k in," one fan commented.

Some netizens mentioned that the recent chapters might just put the entirety of part 2 on a path to surpass part 1 of the series, which is currently held as the golden age of the story. Several other fans took the opportunity to express their apologies for their earlier complaints regarding part 2, realizing that everything was a setup by mangaka Fujimoto.

"Fujimoto has been cooking! With the latest stuff happening in CSM this is looking like it’s going to be greater than part 1," one fan wrote.
"Latest chapters are so good, I wanna apologize for saying it got boring since part 1 ended," another fan commented.

Chapter 178 ended with the Aging Devil offering itself up to Pochita, and the next chapter will reveal whether Pochita takes up its offer or somehow starts a fight against the Primordial Aging Devil.

Chainsaw Man chapter 179 will be released on October 2, 2024, at 12 am JST, and will be available for reading on Shueisha's MANGA Plus platform.
