Chainsaw Man chapter 170 recently came out and was a massive shock to the entire fandom as it was revealed that Barem, the leader of the church worshipping the Chainsaw Devil, took the life of Nayuta, Denji's loved one. It was a moment that took fans by surprise, especially considering the gruesome nature of the event, as it was hinted that Denji had eaten Nayuta's body parts without realizing it.
Most fans of the Chainsaw Man series are not strangers to tragedy and have seen Denji losing loved ones time and time again, with the likes of Aki and Power being very prominent examples, but Nayuta's case was an even greater shock. That is mainly due to how fans were expecting Denji to save her and also how she was savagely torn to pieces and her head was shown on a plate.

Chainsaw Man fandom goes into a frenzy after Nayuta's death is revealed
Chapter 170 of the manga was released this week and showed the continuation of Barem's arrival at the sushi bar where Denji, Asa Mitaka, and the others were. It was in this chapter that Barem displayed his intentions, revealing that he wants Denji's Chainsaw powers to erase devils from existence, which requires him to reach his full potential through absolute misery.
The massive cliffhanger for this chapter was the revelation that Nayuta's head was on a plate, much to everybody's surprise and disgust, while also hinting at the fact that they were eating her body parts, which is a callback to how Denji ate Makima at the end of the first part. Speaking of the protagonist, this moment is also meant to psychologically break him and release his full form, which has not appeared since fighting Makima.
This scene obviously took the internet by storm, as fans were utterly shocked at how author Tatsuki Fujimoto mercilessly murdered Nayuta in a very gruesome manner. While there is no denying that Fujimoto has been prone to do that in this series and his other hit manga, Fire Punch, there is a strong argument to be made that Nayuta's death is one of the most shocking in terms of execution.
Reactions online
Reactions across the Chainsaw Man fandom were varied, although the overall perception of the chapter was very positive. Granted, a lot of fans were in pain as they witnessed the loss of another loved one of Denji, feeling that the series is a constant whirlwind of misery.
Others were simply cursing at the author, claiming that he doesn't stop when it comes to providing pain and suffering to his protagonist. That last point has even reached the point of turning into a running meme on social media.
"Fujimoto just lit the biggest fuse in Chainsaw Man HISTORY. Throughout P2 Denji has not been stable, he never was, never recovered, Nayuta was his bubble, kept him together, gave him a reason to live, a smile to come home to Barem just took that away from him," a person said.
"Yeah after the last few chapters and now this any concept of fujimoto holding back in chainsaw man is completely out the window prepare for the most horrifying sequence of events to come," another person said.
"NAYUTA....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TELL ME THIS S..T IS FAKE BRO, PLEASE, FUJIMOTO," someone else said.
This isn't anything new in the series, as Power and Aki were also killed in the first part of the series, with Denji suffering a lot because of it. In that regard, it seems fairly obvious to predict that Nayuta's death could have a similar impact on his psyche and perhaps an even greater one.
"Nayuta was the best thing that happened to denji after losing aki and power how could fujimoto do something this vile," someone said.
"Fujimoto really took all of denji’s pain, tripled it and gave it back to him," another person said.
It is very likely that things are going to get ugly in the coming Chainsaw Man chapters, and Denji could unleash his full Devil form, much like he did against Makima. However, that is mere fan speculation at the moment.
