Jujutsu Kaisen reached a peak of worldwide attention with the Satoru Gojo vs. Ryomen Sukuna in the manga. Although the former lost the battle and died, that doesn't diminish his performance. In what was a battle between the two most powerful sorcerers in the series, Gojo delivered the goods and lived up to his potential, even going as far as showing more than what people expected.

Moreover, it is a good example that Jujutsu Kaisen fans shouldn't feel that his character was undermined by author Gege Akutami when considering how he had all the odds stacked against him and still managed to compete with the strongest sorcerer of all time. It is a testament to his strengths and natural talents when it comes to sorcery, which the manga managed to display in this battle.

Explaining Satoru Gojo's feats when fighting Ryomen Sukuna in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga

It is true that Satoru Gojo died fighting Ryomen Sukuna, and many people undermined his legacy because of the "Nah, I'd win" moment and the rivalry between the fandoms of these two characters. However, there is no shame in Gojo losing against the most powerful sorcerer in the series and managing to go down while accomplishing significant feats.

One of his most notorious achievements was destroying Mahoraga, a Shikigami regarded as nearly indestructible. There was also a point where he had to fight Mahoraga, Sukuna, and Agito simultaneously, which is a feat that no other character in the series could have dealt with if put in his shoes.

Gojo also delivered an Unlimited Hollow Purple, hitting Sukuna with a Black Flash (perhaps the best person to ever hit the King of Curses with that technique). Gojo even went as far as causing brain damage to his enemy, which Sukuna didn't even suffer when facing the remaining sorcerers. Satoru even received praise from Sukuna, a feat in and out of itself because of the latter's egotistical nature.

It is quite telling that before his fight with Sukuna, Gojo only had one truly difficult fight, and that was against Toji Fushiguro during the Hidden Inventory arc in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. Despite the lack of challenges where his abilities could be pushed, he managed to keep up for the most part with Ryomen Sukuna, who fought the entirety of the Heian era and the majority of the modern sorcerers.

Moreover, he had to deal with his Cursed Energy running out and adapting to these challenges, which he never had to deal with during his entire run as a sorcerer. He was also capable of landing a hit against an unbeatable Domain Expansion, thus showing that Gojo did outperform the expectations to a degree.

Perhaps the biggest gripe many people have with the conclusion is how Jujutsu Kaisen author Gege Akutami killed Gojo offscreen and how the fight was paneled and narrated, with many characters commenting on the battle. There are valid criticisms in that regard, but there is no denying that Satoru outperformed and accomplished several major feats.

Final thoughts

Satoru Gojo's death at the hands of Sukuna might have been a heartbreaking moment for many Jujutsu Kaisen fans, but that shouldn't stop readers from appreciating his performance. He managed to keep up with the strongest character of the series on his own and also accomplished some feats that no other sorcerer in the story achieved.
