Hagoromo from Naruto was one of the biggest factors that led to the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War and Kaguya Otsutsuki. His decision to offer Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha his chakra proved wonders such that these two ended the lives of the final antagonist of the series and released the entire world from the trap of dreams that were created through the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

However, what would have happened if Hagoroma was the antagonist, instead of his mother? Fans might not believe it but he could have been a stronger foe to defeat as compared to Kaguya considering how much lore was backing him. This was thanks to Tobi infiltrating the Five Kage Summit and explaining the terror of the Sage of the Six Paths who later appeared as an ally, instead of a foe.

Naruto: Exploring Hagoromo as the final antagonist of the series

Hagoromo Otsutsuki, more commonly referred to as the Sage of the Six Paths, was the son of Princess Kaguya Otsutuki and Tenji. Hagoromo was also the father of Nishu, the man who started the shinobi world. He was also the first jinchuriki, who had the Ten-Tails inside him.

After he was born, his mother became obsessed with chakra and wanted to consume everything that had this life force inside it. So, she even wanted to consume her children, Hagoromo and his twin brother Hamura. Fortunately, these two managed to stick together and seal their mother, thus ending the chain of killing before it even started.

However, Kaguya didn't sit well as the villain because the series didn't develop any lore around her character and suddenly introduced her near the end of the series as the final antagonist. Her existence was hinted through various panels but that wasn't enough to justify her character as the final antagonist of the series.

On the other hand, Hagoromo had enough lore behind his character, During the Five Kage Summit arc, Tobi infiltrated the place where the village leaders were holding the Summit. While the leaders were holding their meeting, Tobi arrived between them using Kamui and startled everyone.

After claiming that he didn't come to fight, he revealed why the Akatsuki were collecting the tailed beasts and the origins of the Sage of the Six Paths. Tobi revealed a grand entity present at the beginning of times and the jinchuriki of the ten tails. As the tailed beast's existence wasn't known at that time, this revelation shocked the entirety of the room.

Tobi revealed how the Akatsuki wanted to revive the ten tails once again by collecting all nine tailed beats and activating the Infinite Tsukuyomi, the Jutsu which was the only way to keep everyone happy. With lore like this, Hagoromo could have been a perfect fit as the final antagonist of the series.

Moreover, as the Sage of the Six Paths, Hagoromo would have no difficulty taking on opponents like Naruto and Sasuke considering how these two wouldn't even have the Six Paths chakra that way. This could have changed the tide of the Fourth Great Ninja War entirely, making the series much shorter than it already is.
