Hantengu's first created personality in Demon Slayer may have been the one fans saw the least

Demon Slayer has become a worldwide hit and has spawned a lot of characters who have become quite popular, with the antagonists, Muzan and his Upper Moons, being prime examples of that trend. In that regard, the fourth Upper Moon, Hantengu, might be one of the most underrated demons despite his ability to spawn several bodies when his head is cut. This has led to some interesting fan theories.

There have been some theories in the Demon Slayer fandom regarding which body is Hantengu's first created personality and the most recent one suggests that it was Urami (resentment) because of his physical appearance and how it reflects the Upper Moon's true feelings and thoughts. That can be a very valid theory, especially when considering the flashback that shows the action that led him in his human days to become a demon.

Explaining why Urami might be Hantengu's first personality in Demon Slayer

Hantengu invaded the Swordsmith Village and went on to fight Tanjiro Kamado and his friends, with the latter cutting his head in the process. However, it turns out that when his head is cut off, it spawns several different bodies, each embodying a certain negative emotion, and they are called Sekido (anger), Karauku (joy), Urugi (pleasure), Aizetsu (sorrow), and Zohakuten (hate), with the latter being a combination of them all.

It is worth pointing out that another body showed up by the end of the battle, who was also the one people got to see the least, named Urami. This personality appeared when Tanjiro was going to kill the little Hantengu and looked exactly like the original fourth Upper Moon while the rest were younger versions of himself, thus suggesting that this could be the first personality.

It would make a lot of sense because Hantengu had to create a first body when he became a demon and Urami looks quite similar to his human form in the flashback. This could also explain why it wasn't used before because, on paper, this could be the weakest of the personalities made as a method of defense. After all, it was likely the first one.

The legacy of Hantengu

Hantengu might be one of the most divisive antagonists in the entirety of Demon Slayer and that is mainly because of the arc he was a part of and the role he plays there as a character. While a lot of fans of the series have praised his powers, which rank high as one of the most unique and peculiar in the entire story, there are also some valid criticisms regarding his characterization.

Compared to the likes of Doma, Akaza, and Kokushibo, Hantengu is looked back on as rather underwhelming and uninteresting as a character, which is probably something that didn't help in what was a lower-stakes arc at the Swordsmith Village. That is something that probably didn't help him as he was quite one-dimensional to some degree, something that the aforementioned three Upper Moons were not.

Final thoughts

The idea that Urami is the first personality that Hantengu created, long before the start of the Demon Slayer series, makes a lot of sense when considering his role in the battle and the way he behaved. However, the story never fully confirms this, so it has to be taken with a grain of salt.
