Frieren’s mana eclipsed Aura’s which tipped the Scales of Obedience and put Aura under Frieren’s control, allowing her to command the demon to kill herself.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a unique fantasy anime that focuses more on the emotional bonds between adventurers rather than constant battles. While it takes a more personal approach to storytelling, the series doesn’t shy away from action. It includes intense encounters with various monstrous threats, highlighting the strength and skills of its characters. Interestingly, the most formidable characters aren't always the oldest or the most experienced.

This is evident with the introduction of the series’ first major antagonist Aura, one of the Seven Sages of Destruction who served the Demon Lord directly. The clash between Frieren and Aura is a significant event in the anime, marking a crucial turning point in Frieren's adventure.

Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

How did Frieren get Aura to kill herself?

In Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Frieren confronts Aura the Guillotine in a clash that showcases her cunning and profound knowledge of demon behavior. Aura, a formidable demon with substantial mana and strength, employs the Scales of Obedience to determine who will win based on their mana levels. Confident of her victory due to her immense mana and the fact that she has never been defeated after using this spell, Aura underestimates Frieren.

The elf had been hiding her true strength by keeping her mana suppressed; something that Aura didn’t believe was possible as she didn’t sense any change in Frieren’s mana. However, the elf reveals that it’s become second nature to her as she’s been doing it all her life, for over 1000 years. Thus as the fight unfolds, Frieren gradually reveals her actual mana, which significantly surpasses Aura's expectations.

This unexpected turn tips the Scales of Obedience towards Frieren and puts Aura under her control and instead of relying on sheer power, Frieren commands Aura to take her own life. Aura, unable to accept a reality where she isn't the superior being, falls victim to her own arrogance and complies with Frieren's order, leading to her defeat.

What are Aura’s Scales of Obedience?

In Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Aura wields a powerful spell called Auserlese, or the Scales of Obedience. This magic conjures a set of scales that weigh the souls of Aura and her opponent to determine who possesses superior mana. Should Aura's mana be greater, she gains absolute control over her opponent's body, potentially forever. This spell highlights Aura's formidable strength, a result of refining her mana over five centuries.

However, using this spell carries a significant risk—if the opponent's mana is stronger, they gain control instead, putting Aura's life in jeopardy. In the end, Frieren outmaneuvers Aura by revealing her hidden mana, which far surpasses Aura's, flipping the outcome of the scales.
