Dragon Ball fans have always been vocal about the original Dragon Ball Z series and how its animation was done well in terms of character movement and choreography. But animation and animation styles in anime have seen quite a lot of progress in the last decade.
While older anime had a distinct grainy and grounded style of animation, focusing on character movement and the clashes between the character bodies and the environment, the recent trend of "flashy and good" animation has started focusing on post-production effects. This has inadvertently led Dragon Ball fans to express how the current definition of "good animation" has changed greatly.
Dragon Ball fans claim that Demon Slayer's animation relies heavily on particle effects
Studios like Ufotable have been at the forefront in terms of animation quality and have a really good history in animation due to their previous works on almost the entirety of the Fate series. Demon Slayer recently became one of Ufotable's most popular anime, with its animation quality being one of its strongest points that is also used to compare it to other anime.
Recently, a Dragon Ball fan expressed how Ufotable's animation in Demon Slayer heavily relies on filters and particle effects to glamorize the animation instead of focusing on choreography and linework. The fan also mentioned how people on social media simply look at the effects and deem it to be good animation, depending on the numerous particle effects being set off simultaneously on the screen.
Fan's reaction to the claim
A fan took this opportunity to mention how completely unhinged and distasteful takes to start with a rather similar intention. The fan also mentioned how the original comment might just as well be the starting point of hot takes needlessly criticizing Demon Slayer's animation.
Another fan simply mentioned how the animation has significantly changed throughout the years and how now it is really difficult to find scenes where the action was the highlight of the animation instead of the numerous particle effects and post-processing.
"I miss the era where everything is drawn and we can see the actions," one fan wrote.
Another fan took the opportunity to mention how fans who dismiss the criticism by saying that Demon Slayer is still fun to watch are part of the issue. The fan stated that these fans should come to terms with the fact that they do not care much about animation and animation quality.
"The worst part is that people go “StOp SaYiNg ThIs, I’m StIlL hAvInG fUn!!!" It’s like, sure, but it just tells me you don’t actually care that much about the art of animation, or don’t know actually quality." another fan mentioned.
One fan claimed that Ufotable relies on an overwhelming number of special effects to make its animation look good. The fan also mentioned that such an overwhelming amount of effects isn't even necessary to make the anime look good.
"Not even trying to hate but I don’t think ufotable is ever beating the “jingling keys” allegations you don’t need 20 billion blinding special effects to make a scene look good," one fan wrote.
Although the actual quality of the animation and the use of special effects is up for debate, it is important to acknowledge that Demon Slayer still has sequences with decent fight choreography.
