As Black Clover fans would know, the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc ended by revealing Wizard King Julius Novachrono's biggest secret, i.e., his real identity as Lucius Zogratis. This development left fans confused over how Julius became Lucius.
In reality, it wasn't Julius who turned into Lucius, but the other way around. Lucius Zogratis was born with two souls, the other being Julius Novachrono. He had allowed Julius's soul to take control of their shared body for years. However, after Damnatio Kira confronted Julius about the existence of a devil possessing Time Magic Astaroth, Lucius could no longer hold back and took control over their shared body.

Julius and Lucius' origins in Black Clover, explained
Lucius Zogratis was born in the Spade Kingdom with two souls in his body—the other soul being that of Julius Novachrono. He was not only the eldest Zogratis sibling, but also possessed the best potential to become a devil host. Hence, he became the devil host to one of the three rulers of the underworld, Astaroth.
While the history behind it is yet to be explained, Lucius Zogratis wished to create peace. This mission saw Lucius devise a plan to use devils' powers to remake humanity with undying bodies. After he explained the same to his siblings, at some point in time, Lucius traveled to the Clover Kingdom and hid himself. This development saw Lucius's other soul Julius Novachrono take over his body.
Why Lucius disguised himself as Julius
Lucius Zogratis disguised himself as Julius Novachrono as he needed to acquire Lucifero's heart for his plan to create peace. Hence, he went to the Clover Kingdom to look for a Dark Magic user and a World Tree Magic user, both of whom were crucial to forming and growing the Tree of Qliphoth.
As evident from the series, Lucius as Julius found Dark Magic user Yami Sukehiro and World Tree Magic user William Vangeance and recruited them as Magic Knights. This development saw the two individuals become strong over the years. Years later, as instructed, the Dark Triad attacked the Clover Kingdom and kidnapped Yami and Willian to initiate their plan.
The Tree of Qliphoth is a magic channel that connects the living world to the underworld. Lucifero with half of his powers emerged into the living world through this channel. This development saw Asta defeat him. The reality is that Asta was the only person capable of defeating the devil, hence Lucius assisted him by reversing time repeatedly, allowing the Magic Knights to arrive at the best conclusion.
Following Lucifero's defeat, Lucius Zogratis got his associate Adramelech to fetch Lucifero's heart for him. Upon using this heart and fetching the rest of Lucifero's powers from the seventh layer of the underworld, Lucius Zogratis attained the power to turn an individual into an undying entity called a Paladin. With that, Lucius came close to completing his mission.
Why Lucius eventually revealed himself
While fans believe that Lucius Zogratis revealed himself because Damnatio Kira caught a whiff of him, the reality is that he was trying to take back control over his body for quite some time. This was hinted at by the manga in the latter stages of Spade Kingdom Raid Arc as Julius felt something huge emerging from within himself.
Thus, one can deduce that Lucius revealed himself because, after Lucifero's emergence into the living world, his job as Julius Novachrono was done. He no longer needed to play the role of the Wizard King and could return to his original personality for the rest of his plan.
