Several Demon Slayer fans have the question "How is Makomo related to Giyu Tomioka?", especially after the recent fourth season of the anime covered the Hashira Training arc. It was during this arc that both manga and anime fans discovered the Water Hashira's past, which was strongly tied to Sabito, the spirit who helped main character Tanjiro Kamado master his Breathing Technique earlier in the story.

While that explains some portion of Sabito's backstory and his connection to Tomioka, a lot of Demon Slayer fans have noticed that Makomo, the other spirit who helped Tanjiro, wasn't brought up in the conversation. The answer is that of her not having any significant connection to Giyu, although they still have some similarities that need to be pointed out.

Answering the question of how is Makomo related to Giyu Tomioka in Demon Slayer

Makomo has no connection whatsoever to Giyu Tomioka and that is shown during the latter's backstory during the Hashira Training arc where she wasn't mentioned at all. Makomo became a student of Urokodaki after Sabito and Tomioka's selections, which was shown when Tanjiro Kamado fought the Hand Demon and the latter mentioned she went crazy after hearing of Sabito's death.

Therefore, no evidence suggests Makomo was related to Tomioka in any given way, although is worth pointing out that some people confuse her with the Water Hashira's sister, Tsutako Tomioka. However, this is just a confusion and Makomo has no connection with her or Giyu in any shape or form.

The only way that these two characters are connected is because they were trained by Urokodaki and both met Sabito, although Giyu did it in life and Makomo did it in death. Beyond that, there is no relation between these two characters throughout the series.

The legacy of Giyu Tomioka

There is no denying that Giyu Tomioka ranks as one of the most popular Demon Slayer characters and also happens to be one of the most relevant in the story. He was the one who spared Nezuko Kamado's life when she became a demon and gave her brother Tanjiro the chance to become a member of the Corps, thus kickstarting the entire series in a way, while also paving the path for Muzan's defeat in the story.

While Giyu might appear to be the classic stoic anime supporting character, he hides a lot of insecurities because of his backstory involving Sabito's death. He feels unworthy of the Hashira title despite his power and experience, thus making him a bit more complex than a lot of other characters in the series.

Giyu also ends up having one of the most celebrated battles in the series, which was his combat, alongside Tanjiro, against Akaza. His fight against the third Upper Moon is considered one of the best moments of the entire manga and anime fans hope Ufotable can do it justice in the Infinity Castle arc adaptation.

Final thoughts

Giyu Tomioka has no connection with Makomo in Demon Slayer beyond training with Urokodaki at different times. Beyond that small detail, there is no relation between these two characters throughout the story and Giyu doesn't even mention her once.
