Hanabi Hyuga's character in Boruto is more integral than it has ever been at any point in the Narutoverse. She has gone from being the little girl who followed Hinata everywhere in Naruto to an integral part of Boruto and Himawari's lives.
She is the Aunt of Boruto and Himawari and is Hinata's younger sister. Furthermore, she is the heiress of the Hyuga clan and is expected to take over her father, Hiashi Hyuga, once he steps down from his position. Due to Hanabi's shared history with Hinata from the days of Naruto to Naruto Shippuden, a lot of Boruto: Naruto Next Generation fans are asking one question: "Is Hanabi more powerful than Hinata?"
The answer is no. Hanabi is not as powerful as Hinata in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.
Is Hanabi more powerful than Hinata?
In the filler episodes of Naruto, Hanabi and Hinata had their first battle. It was between an older Hinata, who had already started undergoing gruesome ninja training, and a younger Hanabi, who was an inexperienced child. This battle ends in Hanabi's victory as Hinata is stripped of the future leadership of the Hyuga clan, and the battle is passed on to Hanabi. While this fight is proof of Hanabi's natural genius, she wins because Hinata spares her.
They later fight as adults in Boruto, and this is where Hinata shows her true strength. While the fight wasn't high stakes, the two characters became more serious as it progressed. If Hanabi won the fight, Hinata would have moved in with the Hyuga clan, and if Hinata won, she would stay with Naruto.
Since Hinata has lived as a housewife for most of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, she should be rusty in battle. She holds her own against her younger sister, who is an active Jonin and defeats her. This was the same sister that sparred with Boruto and tossed him around like a rag doll.
Hanabi and Hinata's power and abilities in Boruto
Superb Taijustu
The Hyugas have always succeeded at Taijustu, with some of the best Taijustu fighters in the Narutoverse being Hyuga. Neji and Hizashi were generally praised for their Taijutsu aptitude, and Hanabi and Hinata were not far behind. From a young age, Hanabi was already hailed as a prodigy, unlike Hinata, who was a late bloomer and grew stronger with constant practice.
Byakugan
The two sisters can use the Byakugan, an ocular jutsu with a nearly 360-degree field of view. This ocular jutsu is the Kekkei Genkai of the Hyugas and, in some cases, has been wielded by the Ototsuki. Toneri Ototsuki was born with a Byakugan that was later taken from him and sealed off. In The Last: Naruto the Movie, he steals Hanabi Hyuga's eyes and implants them in his to become the Tensaigan.
Byakugan users can sense chakra at levels above the Sharingan and Rinnegan. This can be seen with Neji when he used it to view Naruto's Chakra pathway system. Hinata has also used the Byakugan to see distances of up to one kilometer away.
Hyuga hidden techniques
Due to both Hanabi and Hinata being Hyugas, they can use hidden techniques from the clan. One such move is the gentle fist that Himawari and Hanabi have used in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. There is also the Eight Trigram palm revolving technique and Eight Trigram Vacuum Palms that Hanabi and Hinata can both use.
Final thoughts
The Hanabi-Hinata debate is a constant battle waged in the Narutoverse. A lot of fans still believe that Hinata will lose somewhere and that she is weak. This perception comes from early Naruto, where her character was constantly beaten and berated by everyone.
However, Hinata's exploits in Naruto Shippuden are clear proof that she is no longer that weak, soft-mannered Hyuga. She fights against Pain to protect Naruto, and in the fourth shinobi war, she holds herself against various White Zetsu. Even during The Last: Naruto the Movie, Hinata held herself against various puppets of Toneri.
