Is Kishibe against Makima in Chainsaw man? Explained

Kishibe in Chainsaw Man is an interesting character that became much-loved by fans not long after he was introduced. He was a veteran Devil Hunter bought in by Makima to train Denji and Power during the Katana Man Arc. He is later seen in other Chainsaw Man arcs, though in a supporting role mostly.

However, one of the things that makes Kishibe interesting is his relationship with Makima. Among all who have interacted with the latter, Kishibe seems to be one of the few unaffected by her. Moreover, he was suspicious of Makima as well, calling her a liar when speaking with her about the attack on Division 4.

He also led the special task force that was created to take down Makima. For those wondering, Kishibe was not against Makima as long as she was on humanity's side.

Kishibe and Makima's relationship in Chainsaw Man, explained

It hasn't been revealed in the anime or the manga how Kishibe met Makima. But from whatever is seen of their interactions, as Public Safety Devil Hunters, both trust each other to be great assets. Makima identified Kishibe as the strongest Hunter in the group and respected him for his skill and experience.

While he was straightforward with her, he sympathised with her nasty behaviour, aware of how she was brought by the government to be ruthless, stern and accepting of no-nonsense.

But even so, Kishibe was probably on guard around her. He was one of the few individuals free of her control, as he was more valuable to her that way.

Why Kishibe is against Makima

As mentioned, Kishibe was not against Makima per se, but was definitely wary of her. He had his suspicions about her. Following the attack on Division 4, he accused her of knowing about it, to which she could only smirk. This is when he calls her a liar and states that he doesn't care what she does as long as she is on Humanity's side.

He acknowledged her as someone powerful and knew what needed to be done in case the situation went haywire. Thus, during the Control Devil Arc, Kishibe did not hesitate to lead a task force to take down Makima and later confronted her about her true intentions and actions so far.

Throughout the story, viewers get a sense that Kishibe keeps Makima at arm's length. While he does not track her every move, he does keep himself in the loop about whatever she does when needed. In fact, he even combines with her, in a sense, to defend Denji during the International Assassins Arc.

Final Thoughts

Kishibe is undoubtedly a unique character in Chainsaw Man. Makima respecting him and tasking him to train Power and Denji are a testament to his skill and experience as a Devil Hunter. Moreover, his "immunity" to Makima's control is another indication of his label as one of the strongest Devil Hunters.

It was this freedom that allowed him to see Makima for what she was. He knew there was something odd about her but restrained himself while she was operating for the humans. However, once information about her was spilt, he did not hesitate in leading the effort to take her down.
