Following recent eventful weeks for creator, author, and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece series, fans are somewhat unsure of what the franchise’s overall status is. Announcements concerning the future of anime and manga alike have blended into fans’ minds, resulting in their confusion about when the series will return in both formats.
Likewise, fans are also confused about whether the hiatuses the franchise is on are the typical one-week breaks or something much longer. In turn, fans are also curious about the reason behind these breaks and whether or not there will be anything from the franchise in the interim of either medium’s hiatus. Follow along as this article fully breaks down all currently available information on the One Piece anime and manga’s hiatus statuses.
One Piece anime and manga hiatus, explained
As of this article’s writing, both the One Piece anime and manga are on individual hiatuses for the next six months and two weeks, respectively. These hiatuses were both revealed over the last week, with the manga’s official announcement set to come with chapter 1130’s release. The anime confirmed its hiatus last week following the airing of episode 1122.
The anime’s break will last until April 2025, when the series will return in a new timeslot. This is exciting news, as it suggests the new timeslot will allow for less censorship, making for a more faithful adaptation. The production team has also promised that some areas of the anime will be revamped upon the Egghead Arc's return to the small screen in April 2025.
The primary reason for the anime’s break was that its pacing simply became unsustainable, considering how close it was getting to the manga. By taking this six-month break, the series can return with a significant improvement in overall general quality and pacing. In the meantime, the series will air a remastered version of the Fishman Island Arc with updated animation, pacing, and more.
As for the One Piece manga, Oda is taking a two-week break following chapter 1130’s release to research upcoming sections of the story. This makes sense, considering chapter 1130 ended with the introduction of Prince Loki of Elbaf. More likely than not, Oda had always planned to take a break at this point, considering how big of a juncture it is for the series overall and the Elbaf Arc specifically.
Unlike the anime, the manga’s hiatus means fans know exactly when the series will return. Chapter 1131 will be officially released on Monday, November 11, 2024 at 12 am Japanese Standard Time. Platforms such as MANGA Plus, the Viz Media website, and Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ subscription-based service will allow fans to read the series with varying degrees of access.
As for the anime, both Crunchyroll and Netflix have been streaming the Egghead Arc as it has been airing on a weekly basis. Each also streams an English dub for the series, which is slightly behind the original Japanese audio. However, Crunchyroll is the only platform between the two, and the entire anime is available.
In summation
Oda’s original manga series will be on break for two weeks, while Toei Animation’s television anime adaptation will be on break for six months. The former will return on Monday, November 11, 2024 at 12 am Japanese Standard Time, while the latter will return sometime in April 2025.
