Dragon Ball Super has often gotten a lot of criticism throughout the years and some people in the community are getting tired of the constant hate the series receives, as shown recently on X through a discussion. It was stated there that Goku losing his transformation out of fear against Jiren in the Tournament of Power is a poor characterization because he would never do that.

However, it was shown during the original Dragon Ball series, particularly against Frieza in Namek, that Goku was scared and overwhelmed when fighting the galactic tyrant. While is fair to say that Super has flaws from a writing perspective, this situation has been somewhat consistent when it comes to Goku's character and shows how the sequel sometimes gets unnecessary hate.

Dragon Ball fans defend Super after an unfair criticism regarding Goku's characterization against Jiren

There was recently a discussion on X regarding Goku fighting Jiren in the Tournament of Power and how the former lost his transformation out of fear of the latter's power. This led some people to claim that this moment in Super, while impressive on Jiren's part, is a poor characterization of Goku because he would have never done that in the original series.

However, some people mentioned how Goku did have a similar reaction against Frieza in the Namek saga, being incredibly overwhelmed by the tyrant's power. Therefore, while Goku is a very brave fighter, there is no denying that there had been moments where he had been cornered and felt fear, which had been consistent in the original series and now in Super.

It is fair to say that Super does have some flaws when it comes to the writing and characterization of some members of the cast but this particular moment shows how the sequel gets a lot of unnecessary hate. Everyone is free to have their preferences, although there are criticisms that are more valid than others in these circumstances.

Reactions online

As seen by the reactions online, some Dragon Ball fans believe that Super gets hate for a lot of reasons that are not fair for the series. This sequel has always been criticized for elements such as Goku's intelligence, the lack of serious moments when compared to the original feeling, and even weaker antagonists when compared to the likes of Frieza, and Cell, among many more.

The sequel has always been divisive to a lot of people, with some fans even claiming that it was made by Toei Animation and Shueisha just to cash in on the franchise's popularity. However, this doesn't mean that everything Super has done is wrong and some fans have come to the series' defense.

"There are things to hate Super for. This isn't one of them," someone said.
"Goku isnt FEARLESS. He just FACES his fears head on like a goat," another person said.
"Super has it's flaws ofc but people be bandwagon hating a lot," someone else said.

Dragon Ball Super is always going to be divisive to a lot of people but Goku's reaction against Jiren is not something that should be criticized.
