Six years and 271 chapters later, Jujutsu Kaisen has drawn the curtain on what has been an epic series. From a large roster of characters, explosive action sequences, and mind-bending techniques to a remarkably well-written story, Gege Akutami's creativity and genius shone brightly.
However, from the entire series, a handful of characters stole the show, and one of them is the antagonist, Ryomen Sukuna. The Demon King turned out to be a fan favorite from the moment he was introduced, and this love for him grew as he pulled off impossible feats during the series' final arc, i.e., the Shinjuku Showdown Arc.
This fondness for Sukuna was so great that fans went ahead and renamed the series to "Sukuna Kaisen" after the release of chapter 271.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 271's release prompts fans to rename the series to "Sukuna Kaisen"
As pointed out by fans, Jujutsu Kaisen seemingly did not focus on Yuji Itadori or Gojo Satoru but rather on Sukuna. After all, this entire ordeal began with the happenings of chapter 1, wherein Yuji swallowed Sukuna's finger and had the King of Curses incarnate within his body. From then on, the story's events unfolded and culminated in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc.
Before the modern era, Sukuna lived boundlessly, caring for nothing and no one and doing as he pleased. However, upon returning to the present day, he encountered different sets of ideals and powerful sorcerers. In a way, his soul was healing from the battles he fought. Sharing a body with Yuji and later battling him opened Sukuna's eyes to a different way of living.
It wouldn't be wrong to say that Sukuna did not adapt to the present times, but he had significant traces of his past self. This is why he got annoyed when he realized what Yuji and the other sorcerers were fighting for.
Finally, he had Uraume beside him. Despite proclaiming to have no attachments, he did depend on Uruame in some way and was glad to see them in Shibuya. Hence, to honor Sukuna's journey, many renamed the series "Sukuna Kaisen."
"Sukuna Kaisen" leads to emphatic reactions from fans
Fans of the Demon King and several fans of the series, in general, took to social media to voice their reaction to "Sukuna Kaisen." It was an interesting take on changing the name of the popular series. Many put forth what they thought the original story was about and Sukuna's role in it.
Some felt that Jujutsu Kaisen's story focused more on energy and emotions (hence why negative energy birthed Curses). It showcased that one's soul must grow and continue to move. That was what life was about; people live the life they choose and experience what they want. In turn, the soul takes all of this in and sustains it.
"also in the end, jjk was about energies and emotions, i think it makes sense, that your soul somehow has to move on and grow, that's what it's about, you live the life you choose and according to your experiences, your soul gains experience," a user commented.
Another section of fans opined that the series centered on humanity and the pain they endured with their deeds. Sukuna, as an individual, experienced too much turmoil and decided to avoid caring altogether, hungry only for power. However, Yuji could bear all this agony due to his inherent nature and his comrades' support, and ultimately, he turned out to be different from Sukuna.
"It always was about humanity and the pain they inflict on themselves or others, Sukuna felt too much pain and decided he would not care anymore at all, while Yuji because of his more solid base COULD eithstand it with the help of his friends," a fan wrote.
While some felt that the manner in which Gege Akutami ended the manga was fair, others were unhappy and wished for more since several plot points needed to be addressed. But these fans found satisfaction in the fact that Sukuna and Uraume got the finale they deserved. They fought to the very end and stood by their ideals.
"Honestly, I have a lot of gripes with how this manga ended, but Sukunas and Uraumes closing ain't one of them. In fact, I actually really liked this part of the ending," a netizen opined.
More people commented about the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen and said that Gojo's role had been fulfilled long ago. In a sense, his character got the closure it needed with the airport scene featuring his comrades.
"Honestly, i don't understand why people are wailing about the ending. Gojo's been dead for 20+ chapters and he already got his closure with the airport scene. I think this panel and your interpretation is beautiful. It shows us that ultimately, Sukuna was more human than curse," an X user wrote.
Many also appreciated the "Sukuna Kaisen" interpretation and panel, establishing that Sukuna's experiences and development made him more human than a curse.
