Jujutsu Kaisen's power scaling has recently gotten the spotlight on how the sorcerer gradings might be more dependent on 'events' rather than a sorcerer's overall strength. However, this flaw might also be present in the cursed spirit grading, and, just like the sorcerer grading, the special grade could be the perfect example in this case.

The special-grade cursed spirits (unregistered) have only 4 spirits and all of them are overwhelmingly strong. However, there is also a 'significant' difference in power between them, with Mahito and Jogo being exceptionally skilled in battle (battle IQ and strength), whereas Hanami and Dagon might be inferior in both of these aspects regarding battle.

Exploring the flaws in Jujutsu Kaisen's cursed spirit grading

'Cursed energy' is the central power-scaling in Jujutsu Kaisen. The energy is generated from the negative emotions of humans created through different kinds of fears. When a certain amount of cursed energy is accumulated through a certain fear, a cursed spirit is born.

Just like the sorcerer grading, cursed spirits were also placed in ranks, ranging from first grade to special ones. The first special-grade spirit that appeared in the series was the 'finger bearer' during the Fearsome Womb arc. While the cursed spirit was strong enough to overpower the protagonist group, it stood no chance against Ryomen Sukuna.

Surprisingly, both of these were classified as 'special-grade,' bringing into question the legitimacy of the cursed spirit grading. However, this uneven grading might be present in other spirits of the special-grade cursed spirits. Four unregistered cursed spirits were introduced in Jujutsu Kaisen that had the potential to overpower the strongest sorcerers.

These include Mahito (born from the fear of humans), Jogo (born from the fear of volcanos), Hanami (born from the fear of land-based natural disasters), and Dagon (born from the fear of water-based natural disasters). While all of these cursed spirits are strong enough to give sorcerers a run for their money, some might not fit the 'special-grade' status.

Hanami first appeared during the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event arc and showcased her potential. She met her end during the Shibuya arc as Hanami canceled the Domain Amplification over the thought that she might defeat Gojo Satoru.

Dagon appeared during the Shibuya arc and met his end through Toji Fushigoro because he was overconfident that no one could beat him inside his domain expansion. As already hinted, these two lacked the intellect and power to consider 'casualties' and died due to the same reason.

Mahito appeared during the Shibuya arc and met his end in the Shibuya arc as Kenjaku backstabbed him. Mahito was one of the sinister antagonists who killed numerous sorcerers. He was also not afraid to flee as Mahito was aware of his abilities, which made him a true 'special-grade' cursed spirit.'

Jogo appeared during the Fearsome Womb arc and met his end in the Shibuya arc at the hands of Ryomen Sukuna. While Jogo might be the most arrogant cursed spirit, he learned through his mistakes. He escaped death at the hands of Gojo Satoru and kept his guard up against the second counter. While he kept his Domain Amplification active, Hanami was too naive to do so and died.

Final thoughts

The pressing issue of flawed power-scaling might soon gain the spotlight and, just like the rest of the issues related to Jujutsu Kaisen, this issue might be added to the sorrows of the fans. Moreover, there is no way of solving this issue because the series has ended with no sequel announced.
