Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 was officially released this weekend, bringing the exciting continuation of a recently awakened Yuji Itadori versus Ryomen Sukuna. Likewise, fans expected Yuji to keep the hits coming in this latest release, pummeling Sukuna and ensuring his and others’ victories.
However, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 revealed that the series’ author and illustrator, Gege Akutami, had a very different roadmap in mind for the latest issue, seeing Sukuna regain control. The issue’s final panel also sets up Yuji and co to be in quite possibly the worst situation they’ve been in thus far, as Uraume’s words about Sukuna having yet to go all out are coming true.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 sees Sukuna finally bust out the flames in retaliation to Yuji’s onslaught
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258: Domain Expansion, unlocked
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 began immediately where the last issue ended, seeing Sukuna recover from Yuji’s latest Black Flash. The narrator then explains that after Gojo’s two Black Flashes, he could establish “a unique Reverse Cursed Technique relay” in this awakened state. This relay was distinguished by the operation and burden of the technique dispersed throughout separate areas of his brain.
The narrator explains that Sukuna should’ve been able to do the same to regenerate his severed hands but was unable to do so because of Yuji’s seven Black Flashes. Moreover, these Black Flashes directly struck the boundary between his soul and Megumi’s, trampling any hopes of recovering his Cursed Technique.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 saw Miguel consoling Larue for his efforts before recognizing Sukuna’s Cursed Energy waves over the horizon. At this moment, Sukuna regained his Domain thanks to his landed Black Flashes, with Malevolent Shrine taking a much more deformed and grotesque form than it had previously.
It is explained that Sukuna regained his Domain Expansion by altering its hand signs and utilizing a part of his brain unaffected by Infinite Void. He blended his Cursed Technique with his Barrier Technique, and amidst some additional Binding Vows, his Black Flashes allowed Malevolent Shrine to reappear without loss in output or range.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 began a flashback where Kinji Hakari stressed the need for those preparing to fight to use the Reverse Cursed Technique or Anti-Domain tactics. Choso then said he and Yuji would be fine, asking Yuta Okkotsu, Hakari, and Shoko Ieiri how they compensate for blood loss when regenerating.
Only Shoko can answer, saying that she converts Cursed Energy into blood. She further expands on the intricacies of using the Reverse Cursed Technique on others and why it can sometimes fail. Choso reveals his body allows him to convert Cursed Energy into blood and that if Yuji absorbs their brothers, he should also do the same. He also reveals that the expense of Cursed Energy used in the Reverse Cursed Technique doesn’t apply to them either.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258: The end game
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 sees Choso say he wants his switch training done with someone who can use the Reverse Cursed Technique. Ui Ui explains that he can swap the souls of two individuals, which reminds Yuji of Mahito. Ui Ui then says he can swap souls without any negative effects, prompting Atsuya Kusakabe to say Sukuna is why Yuji has grown so much as a sorcerer.
Since Sukuna used his Cursed Technique in Yuji’s body so often, his body remembers using Special Grade jutsu. Switch training will do the same thing, with Kusakabe using the opportunity to hammer Cursed Energy manipulation and a Simple Domain into his body so it learns it. In turn, Yuji should be able to utilize these skills when they swap back.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 sees Ui Ui elaborate that they can only swap twice a month, telling them to consider their pairings wisely. In the present, Yuji is using New Shadow Style’s Simple Domain to withstand Sukuna’s Domain Expansion. Yuji says he can tell the Domain is incomplete, which the narrator confirms.
It is elaborated that by enveloping his Domain in an outer-shelled barrier, Sukuna could get rid of the Binding Vow, which forced an escape route from the Domain. This also changed the operation of the Domain, forcing its sure-hit effect to activate on everything within the materialized landscape. This includes Maki Zen’in, who’d otherwise have been impossible to hit due to her lack of Cursed Energy.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258 then saw the narrator elaborate that in his current state, Sukuna cannot maintain such a high-level Domain indefinitely, asserting Malevolent Shrine would collapse in 99 seconds. Yuji, Maki, Choso, and Takuma Ino all tried bearing the brunt of Sukuna’s Domain, but Yuji’s Simple Domain eventually shattered.
This sent him flying back as he was run through with several dozen slashes, one of which even tore off his leg close to its heel. However, an unfazed Yuji immediately heals himself via Reverse Cursed Technique and stands back up, excited to see that the slashes stopped and he endured the attack. However, the issue ends with Sukuna chanting, “Furnace, Open,” which brings forth the flames he used on Jogo during the Shibuya Incident arc.
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 258: In summation
Overall, chapter 258 is an exciting entry into the series, largely due to its decision to begin staging a Sukuna comeback against Yuji and co. While this does, unfortunately, spell doom for them and realistically suggests at least one more of the group will perish in the coming weeks, it is nevertheless an enthralling development.
Unfortunately, fans will wait a while to see this twist develop further, thanks to Shueisha taking a publisher break for the Golden Week holiday in Japan. Likewise, fans can expect the series to return with chapter 259 on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 12 am Japanese Standard Time.
