Jujutsu Kaisen has taken the world by storm through its fantasy world of Cursed Energy, Cursed Spirits and Jujutsu Sorcerers. It witnessed a meteoric rise to fame following the release of the first two seasons of its anime adaptation. Now, it's regarded one of the best modern-day series.
The story is supposed to be centered around Yuji Itadori, an unsuspecting teenager thrust into the Jujutsu World by accident. Alongside him, Megumi Fushiguro served as the deuteragonist till he was overtaken by Demon King Ryomen Sukuna.
However, while the story focuses on Yuji and his developent, a behind-the-scenes Jujutsu Kaisen exhibition seems to depict why Megumi's origin story is better done than Yuji's.
Jujutsu Kaisen exhibit elucidates why Megumi's backstory trumps Yuji's
To begin with, Megumi was slated to be the series protagonist with his sister, Tsumiki, also having an important role.
However, creator Gege Akutami had a change of heart and decided to make Yuji the focus of Jujutsu Kaisen. But when looked at closely, Megumi Fushiguro is the key to this entire dance.
First, Megumi's father, Toji Fushiguro, was the one who pushed Gojo Satoru to reach enlightenment. It was due to defeat at Toji's hands that Gojo awakened and became the "Honoured One". Second, Megumi is originally a Zenin and was supposed to be Gojo's sworn enemy, but a turn of events made Gojo his foster father.
Third, Megumi possesses arguably the series' strongest Cursed Technique, i.e., the Ten Shadows Technique. This is one of the reasons why Sukuna waited so patiently take over Megumi's body. Fourth, Megumi seems to be the only one who can save Megumi, as the other sorcerers are having no luck.
Moving over to Yuji Itadori, he doesn't seem like a regular anime protagonist. True enough, he has undergone substantial growth through intense training and damaging trauma. However, he doesn't seem to have a goal (becoming Pirate King or maybe a Hokage) apart from wanting to rid the world of Sukuna.
Not to mention, he's one of the few characters whose Domain Expansion is still a mystery. Granted that Domain Expansion is the pinnacle of Jujutsu sorcerery, but Yuji's origins seem to be quite favorable for Jujutsu when looked at from a power perspective. Even so, the series is yet ongoing so we might just see it soon.
To further this explanation, Megumi's origin story and story as a whole are more interwined with the main plot than Yuji's is. The dark haired teen looks to be at the center of nearly everything and potentially the key to stopping the unshakeable King of Curses.
Final Thoughts
Megumi Fushiguro has a major role to play in the story despite being on the sidelines at the moment.
Before being overtaken by Sukuna, he served as the deuteragonist, sharing the spotlight with Yuji and other characters. To be noted, all this time, his tale was being built up till it climaxed with Sukuna taking over.
Now, the Demon King gained a massive power-up, thanks to Megumi's Ten Shadows. His lesser mental resilience in comparison to other characters is also what made him more of a target. But even if Sukuna were ousted from his body, he still holds the key to beginning the Tengen-Humanity merger.
So, to summarize, Megumi's backstory looks to be better detailed and executed than Yuji's. But that's not to say that Yuji's is done improperly.
