Jujutsu Kaisen is two chapters away from its climax and the author is trying to tie every string he left loose. However, as expected, the fandom is expecting the author to be transparent, but that is not always possible. To top it off, the biggest misunderstanding in the fandom is the relationship between Sukuna and Itadori.
The fandom didn't like Itadori pitying Sukuna because they wanted the antagonist to face the ending he deserved, more specifically, deserve the same humiliating death as Gojo Satoru.
However, Gege Akutami could have redeemed this in 265, which was ignored by the majority of the fandom. The symbolism of each panel revealed how Gege gave Itadori and Sukuna a much-needed end.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Exploring the symbolism of Yuji and Sukuna in Yuji's domain expansion
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 264, after Sukuna evaded Hana Kurusu's Maximum Jacob's Ladder and took care of her, and Aoi Todo, the fandom witnessed a one-on-one between Ryomen Sukuna and Itadori Yuji.
After hitting the antagonist with continuous Black Flash techniques, the protagonist spared no moment and activated his unnamed domain expansion.
After his domain was activated, Yuji and Sukuna were transported to a different time-space where they were sitting on a train station. This was the train station of Sendai, Itadori's hometown.
Where Itadori's domain expansion still remains a big question because the author didn't specify how it worked, the symbolism in it redeemed the biggest mistakes the author made regarding these two.
At the start of Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 265, Yuji and Sukuna exit the train station and Itadori showed him a statue which the antagonist was clearly uninterested in.
Later in the series, Itadori kept showing the antagonist the local attraction points but the antagonist was uninterested, showing that Itadori enjoyed the little things in life the most.
On the other hand, when the talk was about something competitive, Sukuna jumped no matter how childish the challenge may be (like how they challenged catching crawfish). So, where Itadori enjoyed the simple things in life, Sukuna enjoyed things occasionally, preferring to ignore the blessings he had every day.
Furthermore, as the chapter continued, Sukuna's temper also rose. This indicated that Sukuna becomes angry whenever he was with the protagonist, ultimately proving that both Itadori and Sukuna were two sides of a single coin.
Even though the fandom was adamant about proving that their personalities had no relationship, their walk in Yuji's domain explained every mystery about them.
Moreover, the most controversial scene where Itadori pitied Sukuna before the latter passed away even puts more emphasis on the relationship between their personalities.
Sukuna was a person who never wanted to save others, but Itadori was someone who cared about lives, be they human or someone else.
So, just like how Itadori was sad about Choso's death, he had to pity Sukuna too to prove that he was the opposite side of the coin than the King of Curses.
In the end, this could also be considered the curse Itadori bore from his grandfather at the last moment, who wanted Yuji to help others because he was strong.
