In the modern era, where most of the fandom consists of young children below 18, Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the greatest works of fiction if not the best one. Yes, the series could be in the top 10, even top 3, for most of the fandom due to its well-established lore and power-scaling, but branding it as the greatest work of fiction is controversial.
In the past and even in the present, there are several series with lore that have been established in several hundred episodes and others having a power-scaling, both anime and manga, that fans, who rank Gege Akutami's series as the greatest, have never watched before.
So, all of that could be due to the internet age that hasn't consumed enough media to declare the series the greatest.

Why the internet age is responsible for declaring Jujutsu Kaisen the greatest
Jujutsu Kaisen is a Shounen manga series that started its publication in Shounen Jump on March 5, 2018. The series is written and illustrated by Gege Akutami and is the author's magnum opus. So far, the series has 23 volumes in publication in English and 28 volumes in Japanese.
Moreover, the series, combining the sales of all its merchandise, be it related to anime or manga, has 90 million copies in sales, making it one of the best anime series and also one of the best fiction in media. The series is now going through its final chapter and is set to end on September 30, 2024.
With the series reaching its end, the fandom is claiming the series as the 'greatest piece of fiction' to air on the internet. Unfortunately, that's due to the internet age of the current era that consists of young people who haven't consumed enough anime/media to give such an opinion.
Yes, there's no doubt that Gege Akutami's magnum opus is one of the greatest fiction pieces. Its power-scaling (cursed energy) is one of the most diverse and intriguing concepts that combines the concepts of all kinds of sciences.
Moreover, the lore established around the antagonists and the protagonists also made the series attractive to every genre, not to mention the anime's amazing animation.
However, the thing is that the young people who are declaring the series the greatest work of fiction haven't read other series with characteristics that could be beyond their imagination.
In the anime industry, series like Hunter x Hunter and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood have hardly received enough recognition in the modern era even though they offer amazing plot building and power-scaling like Jujutsu Kaisen.
Moreover, the latest anime series of the same genre like Mushoku Tensei also deserves the same praise due to the lore it developed in a few seasons, becoming one of the best isekai series.
In the manga industry, old series like One Piece and modern-day Shounen series like Kagurabachi are also worthy of the title of 'the greatest fiction in media,' as they offer lore as amazing as Gege Akutami's magnum opus.
However, fans who reckon Jujutsu Kaisen as the greatest fiction in media haven't read such series and are giving away such a big title seemingly without any basis.
Final thoughts
Gege Akutami's magnum opus' anime adaptation was declared the most popular anime series in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records, but 'popularity' doesn't equal 'best' in any sense.
The series received a worldwide reception due to its animation, plotline, singers, and other factors. But out of them, only those fans would declare the series 'the greatest' who haven't consumed enough anime.
It doesn't mean that Jujutsu Kaisen is a bad or mediocre series; its just that the basis fans are using for dealing it the 'the greatest' can apply to numerous other series, so the fandom needs to explore the anime medium more before making such claims.
