Jujutsu Kaisen's Mahoraga was overhyped and the plot proves it

Through Megumi Fushiguro and others, Jujutsu Kaisen utilized the idea of summoning Shikigami. These monstrous creatures resemble Curse Spirits and are conjured to act as familiars for sorcerers. They can be used to aid in battle, as a means of escape or maybe for reconnaissance.

They can be summoned through multiple mediums and must be tamed by the summoning sorcerer before they can be used. Shikigami seen during the series are Max Elephant, Toad, Neu, Divine Dogs, and others.

There was one particular Shikigami that struck fear into summoners' hearts and had never been tamed - Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga. However, with the series' present scenario, was Mahoraga less than he was made out to be?

Jujutsu Kaisen: Mahoraga may have been overhyped, especially when fighting alone

Mahoraga was the most uncontrollable shikigami in the history of the Ten Shadows Technique. It had never been tamed or commanded like other Shikigami in the history of the entire Zenin Clan. However, users of the technique could summon it via an exorcism ritual to attempt to exorcise it whenever they wanted.

Megumi considered summoning Mahoraga as a last resort twice before ultimately doing it during the Shibuya Incident. Backed against a wall by Haruta Shigemo, he called upon Mahoraga. The two sorcerers would have been killed had Ryomen Sukuna not shown up and interrupted the exorcism ritual.

Thus began a destructive battle between the two, laying waste to a part of Shibuya City. Sukuna was able to best the Shikigami and end the ritual. But this is where the idea of Mahoraga being overhyped comes in.

Sukuna majorly used physical strength and basic techniques to defeat him. Ultimately, Sukuna's Domain Expansion, Malevolent Shrine, was the key to victory, relentlessly slashing Mahoraga before it was incinerated with Fire Arrow.

Now, Mahoraga was regenerating but it remains unclear if it was through Reverse Cursed Technique (RCT). But as its technique suggests, it adapted to each attack to survive. This worked both defensively and offensively, adapting to handle attacks and adapting itself to break through its opponent's defenses.

So in hindsight, barring Sukuna, there are other powerful sorcerers who could also beat Mahoraga. For instance, Yuta's Domain could utilize Jacob's Ladder, rendering the Shikigami's technique useless before landing a major blow. Again, Kenjaku's intellect and massive pool of Cursed Spirits would allow him to win against Mahoraga.

In conclusion

There is the undeniable fact that sorcerers like Yuta and Kenjaku are among the top 1% of Jujutsu Society. Individuals like them possess immensely powerful techniques and abilities that could overwhelm the Divine General. Other than that, few stand a chance against this Shikigami.

Moreover, Mahoraga is not meant to fight alone. It is supposed to fight alongside a master. For instance, when Sukuna fought Yorozu, he only summoned the General's wheel. This allowed Sukuna to handle the adaptation process, which when complete, resulted in Mahoraga emerging to guarantee victory.

In conclusion, it might be safe to say that Divine General Mahoraga was possibly overhyped when fighting alone. After all, it is a Shikigami and requires to be tamed and mastered before entering battle. However, as Sukuna demonstrated, when tamed, Mahoraga is quite a powerful force.
