Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 12: Understanding the reason behind Jura calling Kawaki an Otsutsuki fodder

In chapter 12 of the manga series, we saw Boruto take on Hidari and defeat him. However, he had some help as Kawaki intervened and delivered the final blow. It was quite interesting to see a thorny fruit pop out upon Shinju’s death. It was at this point that Boruto confirmed with Kashin Koji and took possession of the fruit, which was required to save Sasuke. This particular fruit is called the Thorn Soul Bulb.

Kawaki had no clue about the fruit, and just when Boruto was about to explain, Jura took possession of the fruit. He even managed to hit the protagonist and Sarada Uchiha from long range. It was after retrieving the fruit that Jura called Kawaki an Otsutsuki fodder.

Before this, he also acknowledged just how powerful Boruto was. Jura was worried since the protagonist knew about the Thorn Soul Bulb, which prompted him to retrieve the fruit quickly.

Kawaki was called an Otsutsuki fodder because he wasn’t as big a threat as Boruto was. Among the two Otsutsuki, Kawaki was definitely the weaker one. Furthermore, he wasn’t as big a threat to Jura because he wasn’t even aware of the Thorn Soul Bulb.

This doesn’t mean that Kawaki is entirely useless in the series. While he has been portrayed as someone who is quite weak, he will surely receive the spotlight to shine at some point. Since he isn’t as big a threat anymore, Kawaki would be an ideal sacrifice, making it easier for the Shinju to consume him as well.

The term fodder is often thrown around carelessly and netizens often forget the true meaning of the word. Fodder refers to a thing or person that’s regarded only as material that will be of use for something specific. Since the Shinju wanted to devour specific people in this case, Kawaki was referred to as fodder since he is someone who can be consumed should the Shinju try to do so. This doesn’t mean that Kawaki, as a character, is absolutely useless and weak in the series.
