Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109 was expected to continue the fight between Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro against Kaiju No. 9, from whose body No. 2 has recently emerged. Officially released on Thursday, June 20, 2024, the series’ latest release didn’t quite see the fight continue in the sense fans were hoping for.

However, Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109 more than made up for it by finally giving fans the full childhood flashback between Mina and Kafka, setting up an exciting final leg of this fight. The chapter also confirmed that No. 9 and No. 2 won’t be going down without a major fight, as the pair return with seemingly no damage whatsoever from Mina’s attack on them.

Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109 sees Kafka finally fulfill his promise to Mina

Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109: Origins and outcomes

Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109 began by immediately throwing readers into a full-fledged flashback of Mina and Kafka’s childhood, where Mina asked Kafka what kind of troop member he wanted to be. He hilariously began spouting about achieving a record-breaking 99% released force, becoming a master swordsman, the strongest gunner, defeating 10,000 monsters, and being the most popular commander 10 years running.

A young Mina scolded him for being so childish and called his ideas a “corny made-up story,” prompting him to angrily ask her the same question. Mina said she wanted to save a lot of lives and that no one who she deploys with will die, not even pets. Kafka is seemingly moved by this at first but quickly says it’s unrealistic for no one to die.

Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109 saw Mina say he has no room to argue what is or isn’t realistic, but Kafka says they should make it happen together. This prompted a return to the present, where Mina walked up to and stood next to Kafka before calling him a liar. She said that he had said he’d be right behind her but she thought he’d never show up, clearly causing Kafka to get embarrassed.

He apologized, but Mina then berated him for lying to her on the rooftop and not counting on her help, confirming that he always intended to handle things on his own. Kafka clarified that Ichikawa reminded him that things don’t work like that, to which a clearly still upset Mina sassily acknowledged this. Kafka apologized, both for being late and for not being the person he thought he’d be when they were growing up.

Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109 saw Mina remember the visions she saw inside of No. 9, saying she’s not the kind of person she imagined herself to be either. She added that regardless, they have to keep pushing forward, as No. 9 and No. 2 roused themselves from her last attack. Kafka and Mina prepared themselves as the latter thanked the former for being by her side.

Kafka remembered the flashback sequence from earlier while commenting on how none of the dreams he spouted about as a kid came true. However, he added that there was one last promise to keep in being by Mina’s side. As No. 9 and No. 2 approached their adulthood selves, childhood versions of them were seen saying they’d exterminate the Kaiju together as the issue ends.

Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109: In summation

While a very short and relatively uneventful issue, Kaiju No. 8 chapter 109 does solidify its worth by seeing Kafka achieve his dream of standing side-by-side with Mina on the battlefield. Fans also get the full childhood flashback between them which has been teased throughout the entirety of the series thus far.

This also sets up an exciting transition into the resumption of their now tag-team fight against Kaiju No. 9 and No. 2, who are ready for the next round as of chapter 109’s conclusion. While it remains to be seen how much time is left in this fight and how it progresses next, fans can expect Kafka and Mina to go all out as they attempt to defend humanity from its greatest threat yet.
