Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 was expected to continue both the focus on the Meireki Era Mega Monster’s lore and its fight with Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro after awakening. Officially released on Thursday, September 12, 2024, the issue did excitingly open up with a continued focus on some of the Meireki Era Mega Monster and No. 9’s lore.
However, Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 quickly shifted the focus back to the ongoing battle, which saw Reno Ichikawa and others fighting No. 9’s Mega Monsters begin to believe that victory was at hand. In reality, Kafka and Mina were pushed to their absolute limits by the issue’s end, all but defeating them as the issue ended on an incredibly suspenseful note.
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 sets up Mina’s capture following the Meireki Era Mega Monster’s comeback
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114: A chance meeting
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 began with a flashback to a younger and much weaker Kaiju No. 9, who muses on how it first thought it happened to just be a weak monster that gained intelligence. He likewise hid it from humans and lived a quiet life, until one day discovering how much stronger it was than humans after being confronted by a hunter.
It then said it couldn’t stop itself after realizing this, overtaken by a “curious obsession” to test the limits of his abilities and learn more of the “secrets held within the human world.” No. 9 then commented on how, as if it was almost being guided, he eventually met it. The scene then shifted to a double spread, which saw the Meireki Era Mega Monster hiding in its true form inside of a massive underground cave.
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 then returned to the present with a focus on Reno Ichikawa, who saw the Mega Monsters he was fighting suddenly stop moving. Iharu Furuhashi then revealed the same was happening where he was, celebrating what they presumed to be Kafka’s victory over No. 9.
This prompted a shift in focus back to Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro, where Kafka was still being held by No. 9 after the sudden attack following the Meireki Era Mega Monster’s awakening. Mina then called out to Kafka as Kaiju Defense Force intelligence agents confirmed that No. 8’s core had been destroyed and that a new monster signature was detected within No. 9.
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 saw them further confirm that the waveform was completely different from what had been seen so far from No. 9. They then confirmed that this meant they were now fighting an entirely different monster, meaning the Meireki Era Mega Monster had fully awakened.
Kafka’s eyes were dark when suddenly the Kaiju within him began raging and chanting the word “die” over and over again. Kafka then roared back to life, grabbing the arm of the Meireki Era Mega Monster and moving to land a punch on it. However, the face of No. 9 then split open vertically, revealing a monstrous mass of several eyes underneath.
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114: Apex predator
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 then saw a ring of glyphs appear around Kafka’s left shoulder, with the Meireki Era Mega Monster then blinking one of its many eyes. This immediately sliced Kafka’s entire arm off, sending it flying amidst a spray of blood. The impact then destroyed a wide part of the immediate area as the light in Kafka’s eyes disappeared once again.
Another ring of glyphs then appeared around Kafka’s chest, with another blink from the Meireki Era Mega Monster all but severing his torso from his body. This attack also sent him flying back and crashing into a building, leaving all those watching horrified to see the state Kafka was currently in.
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 saw the Kaiju Defense Force officials confirm that Kafka had lost all his vital signs, with everyone in disbelief over this. However, an enraged Mina immediately demanded an ammo drop on her location, wanting to attack the Meireki Era Mega Monster with her weapon before it could regenerate its limbs.
The resupply was immediately ordered, but an attack quickly cut Mina’s weapon in half to the point of unusability. This attack also did massive damage to Mina and the surrounding area, as it was revealed that the Meireki Era Mega Monster regenerated its original limbs, plus six extra arms with three on each side.
The tear in its face also now extended down its entire body, with even more eyes popping up as well as a pair of hands seemingly widening the tear’s gap. Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 then saw Mina remember No. 9’s words to her about no one ever escaping, no matter what time period it was or their strength. Still enraged, she raised her pistol to fire at the Meireki Era Mega Monster, but it then launched the same glyph-ring attack on her that it did on Kafka Hibino.
The issue ended with Mina shocked to see the glyphs appear over her face, as a panel of a young No. 9 reaffirming that not a single person has ever escaped appeared. This appeared to be a flashback to when it met the Meireki Era Mega Monster, as No. 9 was standing at the edge of a cliff and looking up at something. In turn, this may suggest that No. 9 was also someone who couldn’t escape, rather than someone who willingly worked with the Mega Monster.
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114: In summation
Kaiju No. 8 chapter 114 is both an incredibly informative and incredibly suspenseful issue that reveals key information on the Meireki Era Mega Monster. For one, its abilities are some of the most broken in the series thus far, simply able to attack by looking at something and blinking. It also teases that the Meireki Era Mega Monster forced No. 9 to work with it, further emphasizing how evil it is.
Chapter 114 also teases Kafka’s death and Mina’s capture or possibly even death by the Meireki Era Mega Monster. While the climactic fight isn’t quite over yet, it’s clearly reaching its ultimate end, and will likely conclude with Mina being captured by the Meireki Era Mega Monster, as was its original plan.
